Top 10 Things to do in Lyme Regis, United Kingdom (UK)

October 11, 2017 Elouise Mccaul

Lyme Regis /ˌlaɪmˈriːdʒɪs/ is a town in West Dorset, England, 25 miles (40 km) west of Dorchester and 25 miles (40 km) east of Exeter. It lies at Lyme Bay on the English Channel coast at the Dorset–Devon border. It is nicknamed "The Pearl of Dorset". It is noted for fossils found in cliffs and beaches that are part of the Heritage Coast—known commercially as the Jurassic Coast—a World Heritage Site. The harbour wall known as "The Cobb" appears in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, in the John Fowles novel The French Lieutenant's Woman, and in the 1981 film of the same name, which was partly shot in Lyme Regis. Its one-time mayor and MP was Admiral Sir George Somers, who founded the English colonial settlement of the Somers Isles, now known as Bermuda. Lyme Regis is twinned with St George's, Bermuda. In July 2015 Lyme Regis also became "tripled" with Jamestown, Virginia, as the Historic Atlantic Triangle of Lyme, St George's and Jamestown. The 2011 Census gave the parish and electoral ward a population of 3,671.

Lyme Regis Undercliff

Reviewed By David L - Bournemouth

From the bottom of the town centre you can walk along the undercliff below the Jane Austen Gardens with great views out to sea. The beach is mainly cobbles but there is a relatively small sandy beach where the majority of people congregate with their wind breaks, small tent covers and portable barbecues. This is generally a very clean and well kept area with lots of small fishing boats and inflatables to be seen moored in the harbour.

lovely beach area of pebbles with spectacular cliffs. The views around the bay are stunning. The beach is a large area and so there is plenty of space. Don't go too near the cliffs without supervision as there are often cliff falls in the area - each time it reveals some fossils - interesting to hunt fossils along the beach.

Lovely stroll around the harbour wall watching the waves crash. Great views around Lyme Regis and Charmouth. Great testament to the engineers who constructed it in the fact it's still standing strong.
The footing is very uneven in places especially towards the end at the back of the Marine Aquarium. It's easy to trip or turn an ankle if not paying attention.

Dinosaurland Fossil Museum

A traditional museum with more than 10000 specimens on permanent display.

If you or your family like dinosaurs and fossils and you have a few hours to spare, Dinosaurland offers something unique in that it feels a personal collection rather than a huge Institute hoarding stuff. It is somewhat cobbled together but the collection of fossils is very impressive and a number of them you can put your hands on and feel.
My three children from 11 to 7 all thought it was great.

Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium

Presents local fish and marine life of the Jurassic Coast in an historic building on the Cobb. During a visit you can interact with the sea creatures. Enjoy the truly unique experience of hand feeding the mullet, holding a starfish and getting up close with lobsters and crabs.

I loved visiting Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. Full of very unique fish and very great interactive activities throughout, such as holding a starfish and feeding mullet fish from the hand! Very friendly and knowledgeable Max was a pleasure to talk to and learn from. I would say that this aquarium is a must-see if in Lyme Regis! If I have the chance, I will definitely come back.

Our local cinema so have attended many times. Just seen the new James Bond film (Spectre) and consider it great value with senior citizen prices and "Meerkat Movies" 2 for 1. Recently refurbished, this cinema is friendly and welcoming and the Seating is comfortable with plenty of leg room. Can take drinks into the auditorium. Always choose the stall seats so have never tried the seats and tables in the Circle. Looking forward to our next visit.
