Wollersheim Winery & Distillery

Wollersheim Winery sits on a scenic hillside across the Wisconsin River from Prairie du Sac. European vintners planted grapevines and built limestone buildings on this National Historic Site over 150 years ago. Today, Wollersheim Winery features a 30-acre vineyard of French-American hybrid grapes, as well as the original 1850s limestone buildings. Wollersheim Winery is best-known for its popular Prairie Fume wine, and is considered a leader in the Midwest’s wine industry. The winery has won many awards for its premium grape wines, including 2015 Small Winery of the Year at the Riverside County California Wine Competition and 2012 Winery of the Year at the San Diego International Wine Competition. In addition to wine, Wollersheim began distilling and released its first batch of Coquard Brandy in 2013. The success of this product inspired Wollersheim to construct a distillery on the winery’s property in 2015. Wollersheim Distillery includes its own tasting room and store with a view of the stillhouse. Coquard Brandy is being made there alongside other family crafted brandies, whiskey, absinthe, and gin. The fruits for the all-Wisconsin brandies are locally-grown, and the grains for the whiskey and gin come from farmers located just minutes from the distillery. Wollersheim’s newest offering, 1876 Presshouse Brandy was awarded Gold in 2016 at the Beverage Testing Institute in Chicago. Wollersheim Winery is open for tours and tastings from 10 am to 5 pm, and Wollersheim Distillery is open from 12 pm to 5 pm, daily.

Lucky enough to be visiting when the winery has this once a year special event. It was special. Wine and brandy tasting all around the winery and special tasting of cheese, stew, bread pudding, etc. really a great few hours. Winery nicely decorated and Carolers too. It was a very busy, but well organized. We all bought wine and cheese to take home.

Went as a birthday surprise visit for a bourbon lover. Made online reservations. Hosts and owners were cordial and informational. Got a one-on-one tour of the operation. Bourbon aged onsite -- on rustic family farm from the 40's -- but distilled at another location. We learned a lot; the owner spent plenty of time answering questions. Ended with a drink in the tasting area and got chocolate truffles as a small birthday token at no charge. Very interesting, local history -- and the bourbon is fabulous too!

This shop was filled with Wisconsin souvenirs, liquors, an assortment of jams and jellies, and refrigerated cases of cheese galore, both gourmet and standard. I bought the 7-yr aged sharp cheddar cheese, Provolone, and Pepper Jack Cheese. Can't wait to return home to prepare cheese toast in the mornings.

Devil's Lake State Park

Devil's Lake has great hiking trails.

Reviewed By Ashley S - Wisconsin

I hiked this trail March 2018. Trail head begins on the Uplands Trail off Hwy 113 right outside the park. Trail length is about 11 miles long. Covers mainly the outside perimeter of the park...crossing roads, links with other trails, and goes through a campground and into the park. Continues thru devils lake parking lot, past north side of lake (toilets available) then climbs up the West Bluffs which is a steep climb of rock stairs (great views from the top overlooks, stopped here for lunch). Descent begins down the other side and around the south end of the lake. The steepest climb of the whole trail is the Balanced Rock Trail up the East Bluff. Careful of loose rocks. The IAT continues along the East Bluff trail. Though this is where it gets confusing. There were no more markers indicating IAT direction so as basic as the park trail was I accidentally took the CCC trail back down thinking it was the IAT. It's is NOT. This mistake cost me another 550 foot elevation change back down and a hike down the road to reconnect with IAT at a later point which meant another up hill hike of 2 miles. When on the East Bluff pass signs for Devils Doorway...continue straight. Do not go down the CCC trail which I hear is a common mistake. The East Bluff will reconnect to Uplands Trail where you began. I packed small lunch and 1.5 liters of water. Started the trail at 10am, finished at 5pm. Get some trekking poles! Enjoy and have fun. This trail is rated one of the best in the Midwest.

We were in the Dells so decided to stop here on our way home. The tasting area is set up in an old barn that is tastefully decorated. A lot of their wine is quite sweet so my husband really enjoyed his tasting. My favorite was the Port which is quite pricey but very good. All in all it is a very fun place to visit! And they have donkeys!
