Fort Ligonier

Reviewed By J288VFrobd

Fort Ligonier is an incredible place with a special history. Despite having a busy highway on one side and a tightly packed residential neighborhood on another, it's easy to ignore the modern intrusions once inside the fort and imagine what life was like for the soldiers, artisans, campfollowers and others who lived in and around the fort during the 1750s and 1760s. The varied reproduction brass artillery pieces and supporting wagons and equipment at the recreated fort are extraordinary and impressive. And the museum and its contents are equally extraordinary and impressive. It covers not only the French and Indian War in North America but also the Seven Years War in Europe, with unique and historically significant artifacts and clothing from both theaters and from the various countries involved in both. Even though the site is off the beaten path, it's well worth a visit!

Ligonier Country Market

Western PA's largest and oldest produce only market. About 130 vendors weekly set up from 8-noon every Saturday from Memorial Day weekend through the first Saturday in October. Vendors are equally distributed between fresh produce, fruit, poultry, meats, bedding plants and perennials. Many of our farmers sell heirloom varieties of tomatoes and other vegetables. Most employ organic methods of farming.

Ligonier Valley Railroad Museum

Reviewed By ALocksley - Stafford, United States

In all honesty, we pulled up to the Ligonier Valley Railroad Museum, and our first thought was "That's it?" It doesn't look like much from the outside - just a building and a caboose - but it is well worth exploring. Inside the beautifully renovated Darlington station is a wealth of artifacts telling the whole story of the short rail line that ran between Ligonier and Latrobe. Started by the Mellon family (yes, that Mellon family), the line operated from 1877 to 1952. It's a fascinating story - one that's sure to enthrall rail enthusiasts and children. The number and range of artifacts is staggering and their presentation is very professional. The docents are very expert in the subject and can answer all your questions. Be sure to visit the caboose!

Lovely little bead shop with lots of beautiful options. The owners are really helpful and they offer classes to learn how to make your own jewelry. I love that they feature local artists in their shop. If they don't have it, I'm sure that they will be happy to help you find it. I highly recommend them.

We visited Idlewild on a Sunday afternoon and found that we had plenty of things to do throughout the entire day. We had a 3 year old so climbing the ropes was really fun, a stroll through story book forest was nice. The rides, the train, plenty of shops and food places. Then we went to the soak zone for the remainder of the day, the kiddie pool was great, they have little pipes and strems for the kids to play in the water. Wave pool, a lazy river, one nice thing is that when you enter and park your car, you always have easy access to your car if you need to go back for anything. You can pack picnic food and not worry about leaving the park and getting back in. I was surprised that we had planty of things to do through the whole day.
