I’ve ridden with a lot of horse outfits over the years, and this I know: When you are picking a place to ride, look beyond any glitz and glamour on display and focus on the horses. The happiness of the horse(s) will tell you everything you need to know about the heart of the owner and what you can expect. I could not have asked for better than Vision Quest.

From the moment I arrived, the feel-good factor was off the charts. The dogs were smiling, the horses Cheyenne and Big Red were hanging — just oozing contentment and well being, not the dread and anxiety horses give off at barns where they are treated like commodities instead of family. Marcia was really gracious—you could forget she was having you sign a liability waiver! Joaquin, co-owner and guide, was so easy-going and welcoming that it didn’t even occur to me that I was on a new horse in a strange place—I was free to just enjoy. So I did.

What sets Vision Quest apart?
The scenery was breathtaking, but that’s New Mexico, so not unique to Vision Quest. What was unique was Joaquin. His love and respect for his animals and the land make him a passionate advocate and informative guide — it seems a rare thing. He was safety conscious, but he didn’t hover. He wasn’t reckless, but the ride wasn’t boring. We went down into canyons, up over mesas, through water, and into dry creek beds. He was happy to take pictures or to stop while I took pictures — he was never impatient or dismissive. Through it all, he just let me do my thing and made me feel safe while doing it. It was clearly MY ride, not the guide’s (as it should be, but rarely is). Can you ask for more than that?

Who can go?
I feel like any solo rider or small group at any riding level would enjoy it. The horses we rode weren’t mouthy, head shy or generally bratty — they clearly had big and willing hearts. I can imagine they would be good with anyone, even little kids. If you want to ride while you are in Santa Fe, start with Vision Quest. You won’t go wrong!

Montezuma Hot Springs

Reviewed By RockyAbuDhabi - Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

We stumbled on the Hot Springs of Montezuma while visiting the Armand Hammer World College. There is just one small sign on the side of the road that identifies the Hot Springs. The locale has very little improvement, but the quaintness of the setting is really the true charm. Be careful, the top pool is extremely hot and very few folks can dip their feet in the scalding water. Step down to the next pool and you can sit in the springs comfortably.

Not much to do in Las Vegas, NM, so this is a "highlight." And it's free (donations accepted). Not somewhere you just have to go or see, but while you're here, it's an interesting stop.

Various glass cases display paraphernalia, with appropriate signs explaining the significance. Nicely done, but nothing that will make you ooh and aah.

Carnegie Public Library

Reviewed By cohighplainsdrifter - Erie, Colorado

This library and many others like it were built ca. 1911 by Andrew Carnegie to improve literacy nationwide. I stopped in to print a few documents for a business meeting. There are Macs and PCs available for free, plus wi-fi, and a printer with a modest cost per sheet. There is a good collection of local interest. The staff are very helpful.

The library is centrally located and easy to find, with ample parking and universal access. The collection isn't large, but interlibrary loan is available if you can't make it to a larger library elsewhere.

Western edge of the prairie bird refuge. Not much to see but the birds appear to love itt. We have friends who retired nearby simply to watch the birds. At first I wondered why they left the California Coast. After resting on their terrace watching the prairie and the birds I began to understand why they retired to New Mexico.

Unfortunately on this recent trip to Las Vegas NM the town seemed rather run down & depressing with way too many closed up shops and vacant buildings, but Plaza Antiques is a bright spot on a corner near the grand old hotel. The collection is diverse and within average price ranges. It's a great place to pick up an old bit of western hardware, rustic home furnishings or cowboy boots. The very friendly cat just begging to be petted is an added bonus to make you feel welcome.

Storrie Lake State Park

Reviewed By cherylynn3 - Temple

We visited for day use only, primarily to walk for exercise. It's not great for that purpose, but Storrie Lake does seem to have a nice boat ramp and RV/camping areas. However, the asphalt roads are in bad shape...rough and lots of puddles and cracks, even for walkers. Perhaps it's seasonal, but the gate around past what looks like a park residence is closed. We really wanted to walk the circumference of the lake, but we had to settle for just a portion. Nice to see the geese there though. Bathrooms (pit toilets) were nice and clean and smelled fresh.

Waitress played it safe. They gauge how well you can handle the experience here. Ours didn't push the limit but she could easily have since we could have taken the rudeness.
