Lamphun is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. Hence it is not surprising two of the oldest temples are in this town. Wat Chamthewi is one of them. It has an interesting very old Chedi with several Buddhas on each tier. There are also other interesting shrines worth a peek and a prayer.

Phra Nang Chamthewi Statue

Reviewed By Raymond W - Chengdu, China

There really is some interesting history behind this modest statue. Queen Chamthewi was, according to legend, the first monarch of the Haripunchai kingdom. This kingdom was one of two important Mon kingdoms in the history of Thailand: the other was Dvaravati, usually though to be centred around Nakhon Pathom to the south.
This kingdom was centred around the sleepy city of Lamphun but it controlled a sizable chunk of modern Thailand at its height. It also lasted for some seven centuries, making it a more substantial entity than you might think. For us we find it fascinating to think that there was once a non-Thai kingdom in this part of the country. Apparently, there are still around 20,000 Mon speakers in the city to this day, and many more have probably been assimiliated into mainstream Thai society. Chamthewi, a 7th century queen of the Mon, remains Haripunchai's most famous ruler. Having said that, the statue itself is nothing special. Head to the wats and check out the ancient Mon stupas instead.

This little gem is a little off the track but I was determined to finally find it on my most recent tour of Lamphun. Beautiful grounds, Antiquities and low tourist volume together with relatively close proximity to town spells happiness for me! It's west on Thanon Chama Devi just a few clicks or to so 9. If your thing is Temples try not to miss this old relic.

Wat Phra Yuen

About a fifteen minute walk across the river from the town centre, this wat had green and lush vegetation (and plenty of mosquitoes in some parts). Very atmospheric, we really enjoyed taking our time wandering the extensive grounds. We were the only visitors which was even better. Peaceful, relaxing and interesting as well, this place has a lot to offer. If you are in the area, don't miss it.

Flea Market Lamphun

Reviewed By DohaDan - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Our second home is in Lamphun but I have to be honest and advise others that the flea market at Lamphun is not worth visiting. It's worse than a car boot sale. In fact I would normally buy something at a car boot but the flea market had nothing that I could see a Westerner buying. You would be much better off going to the Chiang Mai night market.

Hariphunchai National Museum

Reviewed By pianocello - Shah Alam, Malaysia

You can combine this with a trip to Wat Phra That Haripunchai since it is just a few minutes walk from it. There are some nice things to see but frankly speaking, I think you will probably need only 30 minutes to see this. Don't expect any interactive exhibits. If you are in Chiang Mai, there's no need to rush down to see this unless you also want to see the aforementioned Wat and combine both for the trip.
