Broad River Gems & Mining Co.

The owner of this little location is what makes local. Well, local! He is a life long rockhound and has so many items for sale, but he also has museum quality pieces to view and appreciate.

Kids did the gem mining. Yes, it is buckets of sand seeded with little gems from all over. But for these youngsters, they had a great time. And will remember it for a lifetime.

We took our finds back up to the shop and the kind owners took extra time to teach the girls about the minerals they collected.

The property is beautiful, featuring grape vines on site, and a huge flower garden. For $10, you get to taste all 7 wines and keep the glass. The owners were so friendly and entertaining, and Lulu the dog was a real treat! I loved all the wines. Bottle prices range from $15-$20. I enjoyed the entire experience. Would have given 5 stars, but it was a bit pricey for me.

We stop at these tourist traps once or twice a year with my daughter. This one is a lighter more expensive than others but its outside by a stream which I appreciate. The most compelling reason for my review is the quality and quantity of the "rocks" vs any of the other gem mines we've stopped at. Completely amazed at the treasure we received here and will likely only stop at this one moving forward. Highly recommend.

Lake Lure Beach and Water Park

If this is your only beach option on a hot day, it is nice to cool off. It's staffed mainly by ambivalent teenagers who's attentiveness while life guarding varies. The kids will love the water slides, water balloon wars are fun as well. A bit pricey though for a quick dip in the lake. Go for a few hours to make it worth it. Bring your own floatation devices and water shoes, buy them at Ingles as they are more expensive when purchased at the beach. Your experience will largely depend on when you go and what type of crowd awaits you there.
