It is the oldest and a well-preserved ancient water town in China. It has a mesh of waterways and stone Bridges, the most famous being the Double Bridge (two adjoining twin stone Bridges, crossing two narrow waterways at right angles, dating back to Ming Dynasty of 1573-1619). Despite the presence of shops and bars (near the front areas), the water town is quite nostalgic at the rear. A great place for photography. Since I stayed there overnight in a nearby hotel, I got up early to take some morning pictures, apart from the evening ones. The Double Bridge is the centerpiece but it is very crowded most of the time. To get a good picture of the two Bridges, walk to the opposite corner ie near the San Yuan Restaurant and take the photo from there, preferably early in the morning before the crowd gathers. The waterways are narrow and the whole area seems to be a spider web ie it is very easy to get lost, evening with GPS/ map apps on the mobile phone. What makes it worse is that various places are dug up for redevelopment so the mobile apps guidance is often useless. I got lost for half an hour; the local residents could not help much as they did not seem to understand my Mandarin. The best way to walk around alone is to follow the main waterway, to branch into a side lane and then return to the main waterway, before branching off to another side lane. The night photos are very different from the day ones, so staying there overnight is recommended.

I went with an American friend and his Chinese wife to visit Shaxi Watertown on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. They have probably visited hundreds of historical and other sites in China - it's a passion for him.
Unlike most of the similar tourist areas in China - this one still has not caught on with the crowds - very empty streets on both sides of the river - very few shops open. The old architecture was very well preserved - although a bit crumbling on the river side. Very few shop open for the tourist trade Some very picturesque Bridges over the small river. Easy to find the town - but a little hard to find the street entrance - and it was a free one.

You get a different perspective when you are on the boat. The trees over your head and the tourists looking at you from the banks. The lady rowing the boat will ask you to pay to hear her sing. If you decline, she will not introduce the sights along the trip. Per boat is RMB120 and sits maximum of 6 persons. A good break from the crowded alleys.

I ventured out to find allergy medicine and checked here first. In the bottom level (basement) they have a supermarket. In the supermarket there is a medicine store. I was able to use my phone translator to get the allergy medicine I needed. Even though we couldn't understand each other they were very nice and helpful. They also have numerous other stores and restaurants on the upper levels (McDonalds and Starbucks). There is also an IMAX theater but I didn't make it there. They offer some movies in English.

This is a quaint little Water town dating back to 1552. It has many ancient stone Bridges and 236 waterways. There are winding canals, cobblestone alleyways, and sampans being propelled along the water by the woman oarspersons. Some of the buildings/houses seemed to have changed little over time, the rooms are tiny, and during the day are dimly lit as the elderly Chinese do not believe wasting electricity for light during the day.
A trip down the waterways by one of these sampans at a cost of ¥100 pp ($A22) is good value although the trip only takes about 20 minutes.
The town is situated within the Mingjingdang National Water Park and it too is quite a pretty backdrop.
An interesting enough trip but probably would not go out of the way to visit as it is about 45k from Shanghai which took our coach about 45 minutes to reach the area.

As far as Chinese attractions go, this is a nice one: it's old and has a nice atmosphere. As far as water towns go, it is tiny: just a few canals that cross each other. There are shops and wedding picture businesses but not that many restaurants of cafes so it's really not for hanging out. You can see every corner of the place in just a few hours. The temple area is impressive. Qiandeng is not nearly as crowded as other water towns in the area.

太倉では有名な庭園らしく、よく整備されてます。
散歩する人も多いです。
ただ、中に遊園地みたいなものを作っていて、景観ぶち壊しです。
観覧車やアヒルのボートやいろいろ乗り物など。
中国の田舎の庭は子供には（大人にも？）退屈なため、こんなものがある方がお子さんには親切かも。

It was not hairy crab season yet but just walking along the Gardens the lake made me appreciate the beauty of the place. The sun was hiding though the entire time I was there but it was still quite pleasant and serene. This place was very picturesque. Enjoyed some fun activities as well as organized by the hotel.

This place is a gem of a destination. For a decent usd50 you may be able to get a small taxi, about two hrs from Pudong Shanghai. Worth all the dollars because you can spend hours admiring the water canals and Gardens. The boat ride only costs RMB10. Highly recommended. For more

This was the location of our business groups' group photo. It is a beautiful area and the Bridges are considered the symbol of the village. A fun fact is that the design of the Twin Bridges look like an old-style Chinese key by the way it crosses the rivers.
