Rodanthi Museum

This little gem of a museum is located in the village of Kritsa and is a must-visit for nature lovers. A unique collection of dried plant specimens and of plant and animal fossils are on display and have been collected by Giorgos who is the heart of the museum. His dream of creating this museum has finally come true and everything in the museum has been hand-collected by him.

Came across this museum while walking through beautiful Kritsa. It looked inviting and seemed like a nice break from the afternoon sun. We were greeted by the museums curator and owner, George, who invited us onto the balcony to show us the amazing view and some amazing fossils he had found on Crete. He then took us downstairs showing us and letting us smell various local plants. He explained their uses in local food, of which we experienced a rather unhealthy but delicious amount of while in Crete. It was so sweet to have the history of the building, local wildlife and anything else we cared to ask about explained by the passionate and incredibly knowledgeable George (who was also on the Greek national marathon team). 100% worth a visit when in Kritsa providing a lovely break from the heat and steep but photogenic alleyways of the town. Enjoy, and be sure to leave a donation as the museum relies on them!

Meraki Greekmade memories

...a shop smelling like Greece! Situated at the central square of Kritsa village among its other famous small shops, Meraki stands out by placing emphasis on Greek designers. Meraki Greek-made memories is an original concept store in which greek designers introduce us to the modern greek design along with the creative aspect of Greece. In our shop, you can find souvenirs that smell like Greece at first glance, like handmade bags and jewelry, statues, t-shirts with special stamps, unique artworks and lots of other things produced only by Greek Designers. New and innovative products and designers are added to our selection every day. The introduction of new products shows our designers' «meraki», to work on new designs, but at the same time paying much attention to quality. A visit to our shop will definitely convince you!

Archaia Poli tis Lato

Other reviewers have commented on what the site is about, I just wanted to highlight a few things for other visitors. Sturdy footwear is essential, the paths are not flat! Loose stones, small and large can make walking tricky, so no wheelchair access You need good balance to clamber up the rocky places. The wind was up when we went, dust blowing about, but cooler! No guidebook, some boards around the site. How people ever made a home on this mountain I will never know, creating their homes around the massive rocks.

Kritsa Gorge

Reviewed By MarathonMannUK - Leeds, United Kingdom

The Kritsa Gorge is a spectacular natural feature just outside the stunningly beautiful town of Kritsa. Kritsa itself is around 6 miles from Agios Nikolaus and is easily accessible by public bus. The bus stop is about 0.5 miles from the entrance to the gorge and is an easy walk. It is possible to walk right through the gorge and come out at the other side. The alternative (that we did) is to walk about 1.5 miles through the gorge and then take a mountain path which brings you back to the start. Including the walk to and from the bus stop, the total walk took us just over 2 hours. This is a wonderful walk but there are some things you need to be aware of. Use sturdy walking shoes or boots because it’s very rough and rocky. You need to clamber over rocks which isn’t that bad so long as you are relatively fit. In places you need to use metal hand and footholds and in one place there is a knotted rope to help you over one difficult bit. A few hints. The point where you turn right out of the gorge (to take the mountain path back to the start) is by a yellow sign saying “Tapes 1.5 hours” - This new path is marked by the little red dots which are similar to this in the gorge itself so you shouldn’t be able to go far wrong. Don’t be put off by apparent fences that cross the path, these are in fact crude gates that can be opened and closed (used by farmers to control livestock so please close the gates). At one point you pass a disused farmhouse (on the right) and shortly after that the track goes sharp left, but you must carry on straight (marked by red dots) or else you may end up at the ancient city of Lato (the car park of which you can see in the distance). There is a mixture of path and track which leads you back downhill to the start point (by the sign saying “to the gorge”. The gorge itself is beautiful and cuts through the mountain with sheer rock faces either side. You begin to wonder how any mountain path is going to take you back but it does. This return route gives you stunning views of Kritsa which would make the walk worthwhile even without the gorge. I have no idea what lies beyond that turn off point but another year we will do the full route and write another review.
