Top 10 Things to do in Island of Gozo, Malta

October 15, 2021 Vivienne Hutton

Part of the Maltese archipelago, Gozo is the second-largest of the seven-island chain and basks in the Mediterranean off the coast of Sicily. More rural than its sister island, Malta, Gozo has a population of 31,000. Home to some of the oldest religious structures in the world, the fascinating Ggantija temples, the island offers dramatic orange-red sands and perfect snorkeling waters at striking Ramla Bay. Rickety buses ply Gozo's roads, making getting about the island an exciting component of your trip.

Ta' Mena Estate

Ta’ Mena Estate is the first agri-tourism complex in the Maltese Islands. This estate offers an experience with a difference where our guests will be in touch with nature and tradition, enjoying typical foods, wines and liqueurs with a touch of the Mediterranean sunshine. At Ta’ Mena we produce typical Gozitan products, making use of traditional recipes which were passed over to us by our forefathers. These include the very popular Sun- dried Sweet Tomato Paste (Kunserva Helwa), Pickled Onions, Olives in Oil, Wild Capers in Vinegar, Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil, various liqueurs and dessert wines and Gozo Peppered Cheese-lets amongst others. We at Ta’ Mena Estate grow our own grapes to produce great wines with a particular Gozitan character. We are proud that ten of our blends have been certified as GOZO D.O.K. Wines (Certified Denomination of Origin) which is the highest wine certification for Maltese wines. We also have two I.G.T. wines which certify that they have been produced from Gozo grown grapes. Therefore when you are visiting Gozo come and visit us at Ta’ Mena Estate for free wine and food tastings. We promise that you will not be disappointed!

Excellent time spent touring the farm, tasting the food, drinking the wine and buying some treats to take home. Josef is incredibly knowledgable and interesting. His passion for local produce and sustainable farming shines through everything he says and does. Tasting the wines and understanding a little about their production along with a buffet produced from the farm was a very enjoyable afternoon. One extra tip. If you want to talk to each other go to a bar. It was very irritating to have Josef repeatedly drowned out by a very small but rude and noisy group on our tour. He has a vast depth of knowledge that he shares generously, please have the manners and respect to listen to him.

We enjoyed walking from Mgarr harbour along the cliff top walk to Hindoq with spectacular views out over Comino and Malta beyond. Hondoq itself is a lovely small bay with a restaurant which gets busy in the summer season but is very quiet at the time of year we were most recently there (January)

Gozo Ferry

The ferry crossing from just north of Mellieha Bay in Malta to Gozo runs a sleek and efficient service everyday from early morning until late evening. There is no need to book in advance, just return up and board. The crossing itself is very fast (around 15 mins) and ferries depart every 30 mins; so you never have to wait long. The walk on passenger cost of Euro 4.65 return is very reasonable. Note: you only need to buy a ticket for the Gozo to Malta leg; when travelling from Malta to Gozo no ticket is necessary just board the ferry.

Extraordinary Ta Pinu Basilica, described as the most beautiful church in Malta, is a shrine and a pilgrimage destination. The beautiful interior and amazing mosaics in front of the church are worth seeing. The story of Carmela Grima and later history of the site are compelling. Take the walk up the hill across from the church to see the marble Stations of the Cross and the amazing view in all directions from the top of the hill.

Standing upon the high medieval northern walls of the Citadella, the view is 360 degrees of magnificence. Outside the walls, a large stretch of rocky terrain, decorated with grand churches and cathedrals acting sentinel as the crystal sea lies dormant in the back ground. Within the walls, you can see the history unravel and feel at one with the many battles and hardships the Citadella has both withstood and crumbled to. A must see to anyone who desires to expand their historical knowledge and engage with fantastic views!

Ramla Bay

Reviewed By DanielaMallia - Hamrun, Malta

A must to visit while on holiday in Gozo. The red sandy beach is very clean and easy to get there with a bus. Make sure to wear a shoes or sandals when walking on the sand as it will be very hot and not easy walking bare foot. You can buy these shoes that you can also swim with cause even when you go in the water you find lots of pebbles and its easily to hurt your feet so if you wear a proper shoes it makes it more easy to go in the water. Before you go back home, don't forget to stop at the truck just outside on the street that sells different types of ice creams and flavours to slush and cold drinks. The ice creams are to die for from the Ferrero Rocher to Nutella, to Oreo, to what you can imagine. And while you are there also try to visit the Calypso cave which is very near and you can admire the view of the bay from the cave. I recommend it to everyone even with kids
