Nelson Family Vineyards

One of the most beautiful family owned ranches in Mendocino County. Over 2000 acres with spectacular views of the vineyards, Bartlett pear orchards, Olive Trees, Redwood Grove, and 200 year old Oaks makes this one of the most desired stops for wine and nature enthusiasts. We invite you to visit our tasting room where you can experience the passion you will only find in a family owned boutique winery.

I visited recently with my cousin and did a tasting with Sherrilynn. She was fantastic! The wines were all very good and we ended up buying a couple bottles. The winery grounds were very lovely and I could imagine it is gorgeous when the vines are blooming. Looks like they have nice events in the spring/summer so check it out if in the area!
Definitely recommend visiting if driving through Ukiah!!! Can't wait to go back on my next visit with my family!

Saracina Vineyards

Saracina was named after a centuries-old farmhouse and vineyards in Tuscany where owners John Fetzer and Patty Rock spent their honeymoon. The main ranch is home to Saracina Vineyards, a small-production, state-of-the art, California Certified Organic (CCOF) winery and the first wine caves in Mendocino County. Working with winemaker, Alex MacGregor, they produce stylistically unique wines with lush California fruit and silky, soft tannins. Atrea, their second brand, focuses on interesting, quirky Rhone-style blends. Home to the first wine caves in Mendocino County, California, Saracina Ranch is reminiscent of the rural character of Napa Valley 30 years ago. Located in the small town of Hopland, in the Upper Russian River area of Mendocino County, Saracina is a 600-acre property with 300 acres in vineyards. It features hillsides, groves of 110-year-old olive trees, pomegranate orchards, organic vegetable gardens, bee hives and a bee garden and four ponds that attract myriad bird and animal life. The vines are hand-tended and farmed organically or biodynamically to maintain the vigor of the plants.

The reason for the title of this review is because there are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe this place. First of all, if you want to visit Napa the way it was 30-40 years ago, go to Saracina. This place will make you think you are on another planet. It is serene, beautiful and spellbinding beyond description. John Fetzer and his wife were the most cordial of owners. John gave us a personal tour of the caves, the vat areas and also information on all the intricacies of the winemaking processes. John's wife was very welcoming and allowed us to take pictures with her and John for memories. With hundreds of olive trees (transplanted to Saracina by John and his wife), massive weeping willows and sweeping views of vineyards, this place is magical. The wine? Oh yes, did I mention they make wine here also. Their whites and reds were the best we had throughout our travels in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. None of the "tourist attraction wineries" came close to the quality of wines we experienced at Saracina. I know that this review may sound a little over the top but comparisons on any trip are inevitable and on a scale of one to ten, if Saracina is a ten, the others are somewhere around six. Do yourself a great favor, and stop by this vineyard. You won't regret it!!

We stopped at McFadden for a wine tasting during a road trip through northern California, and it's one of the most generous tastings I've ever experienced. 12 different wines for free? Can't beat that. While we weren't completely bowled over by any of them, we walked away with a few bottles and a nice story to tell. The host was a little bit overbearing, and we didn't need to be told over and over how many major wineries apparently purchase grapes from McFadden, which unfortunately detracted slightly from the overall experience.

It's an easy stop in Hopland and worth putting on your list if you're in the area.

Overall a very good place to spend a day !!

The center isn't just about solar power--- it has info/exhibits about environmentally friendly building materials (straw bale, cob), passive and active solar design in architecture, organic gardening and permaculture. The grounds are beautiful with many different plants and trees. For the children there are fish to feed in the koi pond and a small playground with a swing and lots of paths and grounds to roam. The kids will also love the bee exhibit in the store. If you want to stay longer than just a pit stop off of 101, there is also a "tiny house" you can rent on airbnb and also a small area where you can tent camp.

On the property there is also a Real Goods store with books on gardening, cooking, caning, sustainable architecture, husbandry, homesteading, tiny house building, etc. etc. There are also organic sheets, soaps, cooking utensils, toys, solar powered items, composting toilets, t-shirts. The store is HUGE and has an amazing amount of inventory covering many different topics. The staff in the Real Goods store are all very helpful and friendly (especially Leslie!). It was my birthday weekend and they were so thoughtful that they gave me a present and a card!

Jaxon Keys Winery & Distillery

We went there to try the wines because we heard that they were good. We were not disappointed. Their wine club had several advantages. First of all, you also became members of some of their "friends" winery. That gets you free wine tastings there and at their friends wineries as well as "member prices".
Another perk is getting a free night in one of their guest houses or bed and breakfast places. We stayed two nights at the big three bedroom guest house near the winery atop a hill with magnificent views of woods and wineries. We had friends who joined too and shared the house with us. Like most wineries, they waive the tasting fee with a purchase, even if you don't join the club.

They shipped our wine home for us and our friends bought about a six foot iron sign that got shipped back too, all without mishap. Great friendly staff makes it all a great stop. Oh yes, though it's not something I personally enjoy, they also distill some great Brandy that has won numerous awards.

Just a short distance down from the Piazza is the Campovida Winery-a place I used to enjoy at least once a week for lunch when it was Fetzers! They still have their beautiful garden that used to be open to public at all times-they even had signs up saying to pick whatever you wanted to taste. Those signs are gone and this place is a little more private as the Family lives right on the property-understandable. However, the garden is still open all they ask is that you do something to support the business before partaking in it's beauty. Real Goods is a terrific place to shop for clothes, housewares, and best of all, anything having to do with solar energy. There are lots of helpful tools plus great educational toys. The grounds are filled with demonstrations of solar energy. There is even a miniscule B and B on the premises. Check out the bathrooms on the premises because the walls are made from....used pill bottles! The staff is really friendly. I wish they had more eats. Oh, there is also wine tasting.
