My 7 yr old daughter absolutely loves Miranda Lambert and owns all her CD's. We took her as a surprise to the new store which is a few hours from where we live. She loved looking at everything but wasn't really happy about the lack of kid things. Most everything was more adult and out of kid friendly price range. She loves little purses and jewelry but they didn't really have a lot. She did get a t-shirt which she was excited about since had out grown her last shirt from this store. We are also big into Dogs and there wasn't a lot of product there for Mutt Nation Foundation. My little girl wanted to get a bling type collar for her pup to help support the Foundation but they didn't have a collar to fit her shorkie. We will still return to see if they add products to the store but parents don't expect your kids to be over joyed when you keep having to tell them no because the purse they see is over $100 and not for a kid.

We are local to this zoo & I feel I tend to take it for granted after visiting other zoos across the country. It's a good sized zoo with LOTS of neat animals to see (some of our favorites include the white tigers, the meerkats & the golden lion tamarin). Be sure to bring some cash & quarters to feed the ducks, fish, birds & giraffe ($5 for the giraffe). We have a membership & go monthly sometimes several times a month & my daughter STILL loves to go after 6 years. I would recommend it for animal lovers.

Mineola Nature Preserve

The Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River encompasses 2,911 acres located in Wood County, and is home to East Texas species of critters that can fly, walk, crawl, and slither, and home to more than 193 species of birds, numerous wildlife, buffalo, longhorn cattle, and a pristine wetlands environment. Imagine walking along a railroad bed built in the 1860s as you step back in history. Owned by the City of Mineola, this is part of a comprehensive development plan to protect our natural wildlife and habitat for future generations. This pristine area is an escape to the quiet of nature and the solitude of yesteryear. With construction beginning in 2002, the Preserve is being constructed with matching grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and others and maintained by funding from the City of Mineola. Walking, hiking, biking, birding, wildlife viewing, equestrian trails (over 20 miles), fishing ponds, picnic areas, primitive camping areas, Recreational Vehicle Utility Connections at THE DERBY, two pavilions with restrooms, playground and educational opportunities abound. Don't miss the active beehive on Johnnie Bendy Trail that can be viewed behind safety glass. There is an abandoned rail bed that lends itself well to accommodate walkers, and a history of that era that romanticizes the area that is recognized by historical markers, such as the Hasinai Tribe of the Caddo Indian Nation. This area is an ideal corporate retreat with facilities to support either a short term or long term stay.According to an article in the November (08) Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, this Preserve is in the top 15 city parks in the nation for its size. The goal is to make the list as a top 10 choice destination for educators, birders, hikers, bikers, equestrians, local, regional, and national groups. In many respects, the site is still in the visionary state, with both progress and plans continuing to develop.

This Nature Preserve is laid out well and you can feed the fish and have a picnic. Good parking area. High point to look out over East Texas. Trails are great for walks and a bike trail.

This park is surprisingly big but the lake is not too big. You can easily walk around it in an hour. The trails are very nice with all levels of challenge. It is hard to get into this park but well worth it. The Lakeside RV area is great with nice water views. One of my favorite parks. Don't miss the the Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge only 3 miles away.

This is where you can see things that were common in my youth...but my grand children have no idea of except via TV. A great place to walk at your own pace...see and touch things that will soon be nothing more than museum pieces to the people of today. Reminds me of when we were a much more civilized people.

Lillie Russell Memorial Library

Reviewed By Mike C - Bryan, Texas

I left Lindale when I graduated from high school in 1965, and have visited periodically since my late parents and sister and her family live there. This past weekend I decided to visit the Lillie Russell Memorial Library for the first time specifically to see if they would be interested in inheriting books, high school year books and videos. They were most helpful in showing me around the great little facility. I was amazed that my hometown had such a nice facility. Wow!! They too all the books that came from my Mother's estate along with all of my 12 yearbooks going back to my first grade. The will take periodicals that aren't older than one year, they will accept DVDs, but are not interested in VHS tapes. They have computers for public use, tables for studying, and a special area for young children to hear stories read. Additionally, there is a substantial section of books and videos for sale. These sales help to support the operation of the library. The books they accept are those in good condition. I also learned about Lillie Russell who sat on the Lindale School Board back in the 1930's. If you are passing through or if you are a native of Lindale, like me, make it a point to visit this neat library.

There are lots of nooks and crannies in this old home, which was constructed in several eras as the family living in it gained more wealth. The home tells the stories of two Tyler's native families, and many of their possessions are still in the home. The bedrooms and kitchen were my favorite rooms to visit. Of course, local legend (and even some of the guides) say the home is still inhabited by at least one of its former residents. Do a search online for "Haunted Goodman Museum" by Stephanie Frazier to see my article with pics, for more details.

Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge

Welcome to Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge, international home to over 37 rescued big cats. Come meet these majestic animals, learn about the feline species known as Panthera Tigris and find out how you can help to ensure their future in the United States and worldwide. We started Tiger Creek for a very specific purpose: "To provide rescue and rehabilitation of big cats that have been abused, neglected or displaced."It continues to be our guiding mission, and as we continue to expand, we are working to establish large natural settings for the big cats.

We visited on a sunny Sunday in October, a Puma called Tin Cup (because that's how big he was when he was rescued) was playing with huge pumpkin, just as my cat would have played with a bauble! There are regular walking tours, our chap, Tim was interesting and really cares for what the refuge does. Don't expect wild prairies but they are well looked after with good homes and are far better off than where they came from!
