It's a 15 minute uphill hike from the ticket office and you have to leave shoes outside and cover your shoulders/knees as a mark of respect.
There are 5 caves with various buddha statues in them - some big, some fairly small.
It's impressive but beyond the statues there's not a lot in the way of information about them, so bring a decent guide book.
You also probably won't be there all that long but it's a worthwhile diversionary break on the road between the cultural triangle and kandy.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is a national park in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring the area as protected is to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank is of historical importance, having been built by King Mahasen in third century AD. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in Forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. The park earned revenue of Rs. 10.7 millions in the six months ending in August 2009. Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of Sri Lanka. The park is situated 182 kilometres (113 mi) from Colombo. Web: http://minneriya.national.park.ww.lk

We had a great 3 hours in the park. We saw so many elephants we were actually getting bored of them! I'm estimating 3 herds of around 30 or 40 elephants per herd.

Kaudulla National Park

A safari in the Kaudulla national park in Sri Lanka is a bucket-list aspiration for many tourists, which mean the place is an absolutely incredible wildlife spectacle. Located in the historic city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, Kaudulla national park presents an ample of opportunities for travellers to spot majestic elephants in their natural habitats. In addition to the elephants, sambar deer, Sri Lankan axis deer, chevrotain, wild boar, Asian spoonbill, grey-headed fish eagle, painted stork and openbill stork are common visuals at the park. Aside from these, one could rarely capture the glimpse of leopard and sloth bear in the forest. Going on a bumpy ride through an evergreen forest of Kaudulla national park along the small trails is a great adventure, wildlife enthusiasts can’t say ‘NO’ to. The Kaudulla Reservoir being the life blood to the wildlife of the park, attracts herds of elephants during the dry season from nearby Minneriya, Wasgamuwa and Somawathiya national parks.

I visited this park in april. its on of the few national parks in Sri Lanka where you get to see elephants in a close distance. However except the elephants it's incredibly difficult to see other animals such as leopards and jackails since its a dense forest. At times it gets very interesting. Once one huge bull elephant got annoyed by our presence and started chasing all the jeeps when everyone got close to him. Its better if all the drivers could act responsible.

Kalum knows everything about the national parks in Sri Lanka. We went on a safari with him to Kaudulla. We wanted to go to Minneriya, but Kalum’s advice was to go to Kaudulla, since the chance to spot large group of elephants was much higher there, due to the season. This advice turned out to be a very good one, we saw plenty of elephants, some herds of 50/60. Moreover Kalum respects the animals and does not stress them by going to close or making noise. He really cares about them. Unfortunately, in both parks there are many jeeps (where plenty of them didnt seem to care about the elephants) and although Kalum tried to avoid the crowds in advance by going to less popular spots, it was not always possible to avoid the crowds. Nevertheless, Kalum provided a tailor made private tour with a personal touch and attention. We also used him as a driver to go to several locations. He drives safely and offers fair prices. And last but not least, he is nice guy with humour and is interested in his clients and an excellent wildlife spotter (crocodile, birds, monkeys, cameleons, foxes and of course elephants).

Our jeep was quite comfortable and on our second tour we were accompanied by a dedicated park ranger.

Great value at around £40.

Very comfortable jeep, the driver only happy to explain everything and the best part is that he had chilled water and cold water melon platter waiting for us after our trek up a rock. Really happy with the service and would definitely recommend.
