I just came back from my second 11 day Grand Canyon with Colorado River and Trail Expeditions; this time we did a full paddle trip.
C.R.A.T.E is the number one company for touring the Grand Canyon.
Our Crew: Dewey, Carter, Alex, LG, Ryann and Phoebe were all friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable and highly skilled in river running, cooking, hiking and Grand Canyon history and geology.
The Office Staff Vickie,Dave Kristian,Bonnie were always friendly and willing to make the trip and Grand as the Canyon (Thank you )
All I can say is WOW. We had a great time from when we arrived in Las Vegas until we took the bus back from the North Las Vegas airport to our Las Vegas hotel.
The Crew was well versed in packing the rafts and keeping us all safe while having fun and being fed. The food was great ,we had fresh food from day one until our departure at Whitmore Wash
We even had ice cream on the last night (message me for more on that LOL)
There was always plenty to eat and even had a birthday cake baked in a cast iron pot (Thanks Carter). We had two birthdays and a 47th year wedding anniversary on our trip.
The Crew navigated every rapid with ease and even I made it through Hermit rapid this time. (Last time through we flipped, Yikes). All of the side hikes were well worth the extra effort because at the end of each hike was an amazing waterfall or beautiful blue pool or a rock water slide. This trip we made it to the ancient pueblo granaries and the Unkar overlook. Wow what a view.
Sleeping under the stars each night was like a new light show every night. We even saw the International Space Station fly by. We were there during a new moon cycle so the moon wasn’t out this time but that made for a great star show almost every night. CRATE provides cots to sleep on which is way more comfortable then sleeping on the ground like some other companies.
My best part of the day was waking up to the HOTTT COFFFEEE WHOOOH!!!, call which was made by our guides Dewey and Carter. Having coffee next to the river and watching the sun come up was an awe inspiring site to be seen.
Time in camp was nice, we socialized and got to know our fellow travelers and even made a couple of friends. We are already trying to organize a reunion trip for 2020.
The time management at Phantom Ranch was a lot better on this trip. We sat up at the Phantom Ranch cantina and sipped lemonade. Then we did a side hike over the Silver Bridge to Pipe Beach while waiting for the new passengers to get there, be oriented and pack up their dry bags.
Some of the travelers only did half the trip and hiked out while some hiked in and did the second half. I could write for days about how great a time I had with this company and Crew but I will say you have to see for yourself the wonders of the Grand Canyon with Colorado River and Trail Expeditions.

We had a great time on the 3-day river rafting trip. Our guides: Julian, Justin, Dustin, and Rolph we're knowledgeable about the geology, biology, and even the stars that we saw during the trip. They were fun, thoughtful, protective of us and the environment, and all of the food they made for us was plentiful and delicious. The scenery was beautiful and the Rapids were exciting.

Goblin Valley State Park

Cowboys searching for cattle first discovered secluded Goblin Valley. Then in the late 1920s, Arthur Chaffin, owner/operator of the Hite ferry, and two companions were searching for an alternative route between Green River and Caineville. They came to a vantage point about a mile west of Goblin Valley and were awed by what they saw, five buttes and a valley of strange-shaped rock formations surrounded by a wall of eroded cliffs. In 1949, Chaffin returned to the area he called Mushroom Valley. He spent several days exploring the mysterious valley and photographing its scores of intricately eroded creatures. The area was acquired by the state of Utah and in 1964 was officially designated a state park. Goblin Valley State Park is a showcase of geologic history. Exposed cliffs reveal parallel layers of rock bared by erosion. Because of the uneven hardness of sandstone, some patches resist erosion much better than others. The softer material is removed by wind and water, leaving thousands of unique, geologic goblins. Water erosion and the smoothing action of windblown dust work together to shape the goblins. Bedrock is exposed because of the thin soil and lack of vegetation. When rain does fall, there are few plant roots and little soil to capture and hold the water, which quickly disappears, in muddy streams without penetrating the bedrock. Opened to the public as a state park in 1964. Park Elevation - 5,000 feet

We loved this magical and peaceful park tucked in a remote valley off State Route 24, just south of the San Rafael Swell in southeastern Utah (45 minutes southwest of Green River, 35 minutes north of Hanksville). We visited on a Friday morning in September just after sunrise and it was eerily quiet - we were the only ones there! We spent a couple of hours exploring the intriguing mushroom-shaped rock formations and taking photos. I think children would find this unique terrain especially enchanting. Wandering through it feels like a dream where you have been transported to a magical fairyland or a distant planet!

The road into the park is two-lanes of pavement suitable for all vehicles. It's scenic desert terrain - particularly the reef of the San Rafael Swell to the north and the imposing White Horse Butte - but there is not a specified "scenic drive". The park is open 6:00am-10pm and a day-use fee is collected at the entrance station ($15/car or $10 for Utah residents age 62 or older) where there's a small visitor center with restrooms and information about the unusual geology and environment. Amenities at the park include a campground and yurts (additional fee, reservations advised), picnic area, restrooms, hiking trails and nearby OHV trails. The paved road ends at an observation point that overlooks a valley full of the "goblin" formations. The viewpoint and adjacent restroom are wheelchair accessible, however there are no trails at this time that allow a wheelchair user to reach the level of the goblins and move among them. It looked like it may be possible to achieve this with some switch-back ramping so I hope that may occur in the future.

There are three main hiking trails in the park. Carmel Canyon trail is a 1.5 mile moderately-difficult path from the observation point parking area down to the desert floor offering various perspectives on Goblin Valley and an option to continue to Molly's Castle Overlook. Curtis Bench is a mostly-easy 2.1-mile out and back trail along the Curtis Formation with an overview of Goblin Valley and views of the Henry Mountains. Entrada Canyon is a moderately-strenuous 1.3 mile trail from the campground through a natural drainage to the goblins and back. This is rugged desert terrain; carry plenty of water and be prepared for intense sun exposure and weather conditions that can change suddenly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this park - it was one of the highlights of our trip. I highly recommend that you plan time for a visit if you're in the area to see Arches, Canyonlands or Capitol Reef National Parks. The only issue we experienced was that there was no ranger at the entrance station so we placed our entry fee in the drop-box. Later, we found a note on our car from the ranger admonishing us to stop at the station and pay on our way out. If they aren't going to staff the entrance station all the time then they need a way to show that you have paid the required fee at the self-pay kiosk.

John Wesley Powell was instrumental in the exploration and development of the west, particularly in helping to map and navigate the rivers of the southwest. Epic exploits, and the information that resulted from them, are all showcased here. The displays are informative, and very well done. The movie that sets up the exhibits was out of order when we were here, though. Very enjoyable.

If you happen to find yourself in the Green River UT area, this hike is really lovely. The hike is mostly flat, following the dry river wash through the canyon. There are pictographs about a quarter of a mile into the canyon on the right, you can't miss them. What you will miss is the cavern to the LEFT of the pictographs at the very top of the slide rocks there. If you're adventurous enough to find it, you will be amazed!!! Fun hike, good for kids and dogs. Some annoying ATVs raging through but still fun!

Nice little river beach. The river is quite cool in the spring, when I was there, the water temperature was 54 degrees and the air temperature was 85 degrees fahrenheit. Children and adults who are poor swimmers, should use a life vest, since there is a variable current and no lifeguards.

Moonshine Wash

Reviewed By SlowDownSeeMore - Durham, North Carolina

If you are in the Green River Utah area from longer than a week AND very keen to hike remote unmarked trails/slot canyons then add this to your list of things to-do. The visitor center in town has an "attraction" card on Moonshine Wash/Slot Canyon, and although the directions on the back of the card are a tiny bit vague, we had no problem finding the trailhead for this hike. You will drive down a rough dirt road for about 45 minutes then the road becomes OBVIOUSLY white in color because of a patch of white sand. There is a turn-out to the left and a very rough 4x4 ONLY dirt road on the right. We parked here on the left and walked the 1 mile to the trailhead because we did not have 4 wheel drive. Once to the trail head there is a little area for parking (no map, signs or toilets, fyi) you will walk a ways down a wash. It will come to an obvious left or right only. GO RIGHT. We ran into people carrying children on their backs that said they never found the slot part of the canyon. So we decided to go the opposite way and there it was right away! This slot is about a half mile long if I had to guess and while it does not require ropes, there are some parts that you will need to "spider" crawl (back on one side, feet on the other, then inch down) or team lift each other through. It's really fun! Ding and Dang canyon are much more technical than this one and much longer, but Moonshine is fun and remote if you need more hikes to fill up your to-do list. ***This hike is VERY exposed, take lots of water!
