Top 10 Things to do in Funen and Islands, Denmark

January 20, 2018 Moriah Teneyck

This region is home to 700 miles of coastline and 90 islands, including Fyn, the third largest island in Denmark. Also known as "Funen," this attractive island of thatched farmhouses, myriad beaches, forests, beaches and grassland offers gorgeous Kattegat and Baltic views. The most popular spot is quirky Odense, birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, but don't miss Ladby's Viking ship grave, where the remains of a 72-foot longship, burial site of a 10th-century Viking chieftain, have been excavated.

This is definitely a hidden gem. We tied up in Aeroskobing Haven to weather out a storm. Lucky for us the tide went out and we spent an extra day. Fantastic walks thru town on cobblestone streets. The people were so friendly and nice to strangers. Hope to go back there again.

By combining this visit with Hans Christian Andersen museum, you can get 30% discount. The 110 bus from The Central Station drops yiu right at the door (zone 1 ticket) and picks you up again in the other side of the road. A great day out. We spent five hours here! It's a wonderful hands-on experience learning about life in Denmark in 18th century. Meet the animals, play some games, eat at the inn or take a picnic. To think that all these buildings were brought to this place from around the country and re-erected here. And it's great for children, too.

Would not say its the best zoo in europe...the enclosure for the zebras and giraffes is pathetic... given how much roaming these animals do in the wild...this zoo offers them a shoe box. There are lots of animals that look well kept.

Marstal Sofartsmuseum

Reviewed By JacobViero - Gothenburg, Sweden

Not too far away in History Marstal was a power center for Danish and European commercial freight shipping. Schooners and later small powered freighters carried cargo all over the world.
Bringing things to modelsize often helps understanding, and the fact that this shipping adventure originates from a mere 4000 population town certainly makes the story almost model size and very interesting. Really interesting actually! The fact that the people responsible for this fine museum seems to love their jobs and are very skilled and informative made this visit very appreciated.
Naturally the museum shows much more than shipping: the area's development from stone age, folklore from past centuries and much more.
If in Marstal where things seems to otherwise stall or move slowly, one should definitely spend a few hours on this fine museum.

Museum Langelandsfort

This attraction was one of the main reasons we came to this part of Denmark, and it certainly didn't let us down.
The museum is baesd in what was a Cold War Danish coastal artillery battery. 4 Coastal guns, a command bunker and some anti aircraft artillery comprised the unit and it's all still here. The control bunker is as it was in the cold war - not the largest or deepest bunker it is nonetheless atmospheric with a lot of electronic equipment (Concidering the Fort was in use up to the 90s some very dated for that time).
There are 4 guns - a couple of which one can clamber on and go into their own crew bunkers which are fascinating in their own right.
A real highlight is a Cold War Submarine visitors can walk through (Suoer stuff). In a couple of nissen huts there are 2 Jet Fighters - a MiG 23 of the Polish Air Force and a SAAB Drakken.
There is an old Ammunition Bunker with a display on Cold War Politics and Civil Defence and a bunker housing electrical supply for the site.
All this and a really nice little shop selling souveniers, Ice Creams etc etc etc and very friendly staff. We spent 3 very enjoyable hours here and it was only the place closing that meant we left - could have spent 4 or 5. Brilliant Attraction.

This museum let's you discover what an amazing author Hans Christian Anderson was. I only thought of him as an author of fairy tales, but you'll discover that he was much more and about his unhappy and trying life. The modern museum has attached to it the home where it is believed he was born. He didn't divulge much about his poor circumstances. Be sure to watch the introductory film that is shown in various languages. Most if not all explanations are in Danish and English. Well worth a visit.

Visit the artist Johannes Larsen's home. It stands today just as it did in Larsen's and his fellow Funish Painters' heyday in the early 20th century. Visit the house, the workshop, the winter garden and the Gardens. See changing Exhibitions of both newer and older art in the modern exhibition buildings.

The gallery itself is really lovely. The elegant spaces were filled with light. I was however disappointed by the paintings. I think they would have benefitted from some editing. There were some excellent works, but too many that should have stayed un shown, and were probably not intended for public view anyway. He did seem to draw artists to Keterminde with a great deal of personal charisma.
The mill, still in working order was very interesting.
The garden too is lovely. It is worth a visit.

You can't really beat a wander around a Danish castle, in the rain, on a slightly cold day, when you can't really decide what else to do.
But it is a pretty castle, the house is nice enough, the grounds are pretty and the view across the sund is quite spectacular. If you have time take a wander down to the forest and a walk down to one of the other Beaches.
One word of warning, make sure there isn't a special event on when you intend to visit or you won't even get onto site without parting with a lot of money!
