Mearrapanna is a Nice Place for barbeque, Public toilets but no kosk or shop, you hav eto bring everything you need. Not the best Place for bathing for small kids but very good for those who can swim and for sunbathing. Big, Nice lawn for relaxing ot playing. Nice walking around the Whole of Mearrapanna, but difficult for kids and elderly people.

The Fortified Town

Northern Europe's best preserved Fortified town, is thriving with history, shops, galleries and café's.

Reviewed By Feenee - Durham, United Kingdom

We arrived today on the Thomson Celebration cruise ship to find a marked trail into town, local people in fancy dress, discounts for us in local shops and a general 'we are happy to have cruisers from the Celebration visit us!' atmosphere. It is lovely to see a community embrace the new (first visit by Thomson to this town) and make the tourists welcome. I hope that we did not cause you any trouble!
The town is rather unique with it's star-shaped moat and some lovely vistas for the photographers. A terrific variety of buildings and lots of cafes and restaurants.
Many craft and artisan stores but all a little too pricey for the general British purse- which is nothing new for Norway!
As an example- 2 coffees, 2 cakes and a slice of cheesecake- exactly £20.00.
If you arrive on a cruise liner the walk into town is around 20 minutes or a free coach ride.
The streets are mostly large cobbles so may not be suitable for some travellers.
If the tourist trade increases then it may an idea for the council to consider restricting traffic between 10am and, say, 4pm to allow for clear streets.

This model railway exhibition (modelljernbanesenter) in a detailed landscape and consisting of 30 computercontrolled train sets is well worth a visit.
Here is also a model layout of Gamlebyen itself.
Very good for families with children.
There is a related shop inside and a cafeteria just outside.

Gressvik Church

Reviewed By Isenskjold - Fredrikstad, Norway

This church has a special area at the back of the church so that the small kids can draw and read during the sermon. Unlike some other churches the kids are allowed to make some noise without the parents being scolded for bringing a tiny chatterbox. They also arrange gatherings for kids where they learn about God, sing and do arts and crafts. One drawback is that the church doesn't have one priest, but several.

Isegran

The peninsula’s history is thought to have started with small fortifications which were built during the 13th century. Until 1680 Isegran was Norway’s only sea based military harbour. At Isegran you will find the Fredrikstad museum where many Exhibitions are held. From Cafè Galeien you can take in the beautiful view of Gamlebyen (The Old Town) and Vaterland in the south. Here you will find a maritime centre which builds and restores wooden boats.

Hankoe

Hanko The island was once the Master of The manor Elingaard`s hunting territory. You get here by boat, or by ferry from Hankosundet. When at the ferry point, check out the old red-painted Seilerkroa (Ferry inn) built in 1883 as part of Hanko Baths. Follow the path up to the once fashionable saatorium hotel Hanko Fjordhotell & Spa, raised in 1877. Turn left between the tennis courts  and you will see the old riding stables, built around 1900. Take the road to the right of the stables and on to Hanko Plads - one of two small farms on the island. Turn left at the barn, and turn right where the footpaths cross and follow the power lines. Cross the stream and turn left, walk northeast towards Karibukta. You may be lucky enough to spot some fallow deer along the path. Fallow deer from Denmark were released her about a century ago, and the island has a thriving herd. Dogs must be kept on a leash! Continue along the path as it bends to the left and you arrive at the bay near hotel, directly opposite Seilerkroa and Bloksberg, the Royal Family`s old country estate, higher up the mountainside and now owned by Princess Märtha Louise and Ari Behn. Hanko has a centre for sailing from the 1880`s. as darkness falls, you can see Kristian Blystad`s memorial to King Olav V, a sailboat lit in silhouette, out in the sound.

The church is located inside the ramparts of the Old Town, south of square and commander's residence. The church is from 1567 and has burned to the ground a number of times. The church is amazingly wonderful interior of the premises, and you can see the ceiling, there are a large number of gold star painted by hand. The church is worth a visit if you visit Old Town
