Hells Canyon National Recreation Area

Birders making a trip to this area on the Idaho/Oregon border will be able to view Peregrine falcons and Gold eagles.

Reviewed By Hazel S - Corvallis, Oregon

The area is beautiful and viewpoints wonderful. The viewpoint is a perfect spot to see the canyon. The road is paved. It appears to be an old logging road that has been upgraded and paved. There is a gravel road from the viewpoint that might be worth exploring. As we had been here previously, we didn't take the time to explore. There are clean bathrooms, benches to sit on and trails to explore. Bring a jacket as it can be windy and cold.

Eagle Cap Wilderness

Reviewed By SR-1007 - Houston, Texas

During a 5 day backpacking adventure, we explored the Lakes Basin, climbed Eagle Cap, and took a plunge into Glacier Lake. Lots of fish in the lakes, albeit not very large, but they're hungry. From the heights of Eagle Cap we could see that we left a lot of territory to have to come back and see next time. Not as much wildlife as we expected to see.

Prompt. Friendly. Reasonably priced. Treetop skipping was great. Area scenery and afternoon shading beautiful. Balloon ride was a good experience overall and I recommend it. Not in the same category as rapids kayaking, down hill mountain biking or skydiving, but a great kick for anyone who isn't an adrenaline junkie to begin with.

Zumwalt Prairie Preserve

Reviewed By Angeles - Burien, Washington

We just got through spending three days here. This is particularly a wonderful place for birds. Lots of predators including Golden Eagles. Many many small birds, very noisy but often down in the grass, probably eating and staying out of sight of the predator birds. Many cute ground squirrels. Elk. And at this time of year, great wildflower display.

We did the day trip on the Grande Ronde river and had a great time. Jordan and Shaea(?) did a great job getting us there and back, very nice lunch and just super nice. Jordan is a storehouse of knowledge and it was a pleasure to share some time with him. In the future if we will be in the area we would love to do one of their multiple day trips. You can't go wrong with Winding Waters.

Rattlesnake Grade

Awesome views with rich history. The history part starts at the Old Chief Joseph Gravesite in Joseph. The Rattlesnake Grade starts at Enterprise, OR, on Hwy 3. Driving miles north will take you to the Joseph Canyon Viewpoint which overlooks Joseph Canyon where Chief Joseph, leader of the Nez Perce tribe, was born in a cave on the east side of Joseph Creek.

OR Hwy 3 joins with WA 129 which winds through the Blue Mts before Anatone. The best views are here and where the Grande Ronde intersects WA 129. After Anatone, you will pass Asotin, where you will find Nez Perce petroglyphs if you drive to Buffalo Eddy, 18 miles south on the Snake River Rd.

Google Map gave me the wrong location. Got information from hotel staff and was glad I went as the site carries a sad, deep history about the Nez Perce tribe that was chased across states, as far as Canada, for their land. You may want to read about the Nez Perce Trail and visit Old Chief Joseph's burial site in Joseph.

Drive on through to Clarkston,WA on Hwy 129 for and awesome view of the Blue Mountains. Better than Hell's Canyon Overlook!

We took the guided tour of the Foundry operation, approximately 1nad a half hours. Most informative one interesting, well worth the time! The guide took us thru the whole casting process. This Foundry does castings for many U.S. locations including the WW. 2 memorial in Washington D.C. And the Cougar at nearby W.S.U. as well as many commissioned works. I believe the tours are only available on Thursdays however.

All volunteer run, Fergie does an amazing job of offering the best possible experience for locals and visitors. T bar and tow rope only, the terrain is surprisingly fun. There are some steeps, some great tree skiing, and a chill attitude that is second to none. Go spend your $20, relax, chat with locals and have a helluva good time.

Joseph Branch Railriders

Pedal tours on rail roads in Oregon where the trains do not travel. Great for groups, families, outdoor recreation folks. Two hour or day adventures rail riding is or near Joseph Oregon Children under 12 are $10. More railriding at Oregon Coast Railriders in Bay City, Oregon.

Reviewed By kayakgirl2016 - Snohomish, Washington

If you'd like to slow things down a bit, try the railrider trip out of Joseph. The trip heading out is mostly a slight downhill incline, so a lot of the way is coasting. The rail riders are turned around in Enterprise and the peddling...MoreYes that would be ideal. Joseph has more opportunities for guests so that is why we start in Joseph.
