La Santisima Trinidad de Parana

A hilltop site of a Jesuit Mission.

Reviewed By TravelReviewer1983 - London, United Kingdom

We took a local bus from Encarnacion bus station to Trinidad (10,000 Gs). Look for the bus that goes to Bella Vista and ask to be dropped off near the ruins.
They drop you off at the main road from which it is a straight 7 min walk to the ruins.
Entrance costs 25,000 Gs per person and includes entrance to three of the sites around this part of Paraguay. There is also a short film to be watched beforehand.
The site itself is very impressive and extremely well kept.
We spent about one hour walking around and enjoying the architecture and nature.
Even seen a pair of amazing owls
Highly recommend

Ruinas jesuiticas de Jesus de Tavarangue

Reviewed By juanofthejungle - Culburra Beach, Australia

This is one of a number of Jesuit Missions in this part of South America. The 3 Missions I visited in Paraguay (2) and Argentina (1) were all slightly different and it was good to contrast them. Construction here started in 1685 and continued until the Jesuits were expelled in 1767. The last Abbot had an inscription made on a pillar before he left. The surrounding farmlands were quite lush and scenic when I visited. Being a bit off the beaten track there were not many visitors.

Costanera de la Ciudad de Encarnacion Paraguay

We drove down the Costanera and gazed at Argentina. The bridge is impressive.
I am very impressed with the city - it's structure and cleanliness. As a tourist attraction, I would not miss the Costanera if you are in Encarnacion...similarly I would not go to Encarnacion just to see it.
Great place to let little bipeds run.

San Jose Beach

Reviewed By Jarko2015 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

There's precious little enough to do in Encarnacion, so it's handy they have recently added a river side walk and beach area; a place to come and relax in the Sunshine, even in winter. There's lots of fast food joints, cycle hiring, typical beach things, although out of season, a lot of it is shut up for the winter. This includes the many public toilets. Come and see the views of Posadas across the river and relax, but don't expect too much of anything except sand and water.

Parroquia Catedral Nuestra Senora

Reviewed By Jarko2015 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The largest church in Encarnacion, the Cathedral is still relatively small, but nonetheless very interesting. Since there's so little to see in the town, this is thus becomes a 'must see' stop. A modern structure, with modern decor, there's still some interesting stained glass and the frieze behind the altar is also worth checking out.

Plaza de Armas

Reviewed By PY4us - Interior

Surrounded by a couple schools, some shops, a few banks, and a Ukranian Orthodox church, this peaceful little plaza has something for everyone. A new park (2014) offers kids swings, slides, see-saws, and several little Castles to run between. There are even two special swings for wheelchair-bound children. A handful of vendors set up tables near the volleyball courts, where you can also rent a horse and buggy ride around the downtown area. One large Fountain in the center and several monuments throughout make for an interesting stroll. Hot dog vendors set up shop, and occasionally a popcorn guy. The park has sections dedicated to the immigrant population that makes the Encarnacion area so special, including a Japanese area with a small footbridge and koi pond. Shade trees provide welcome relief from the heat and should all the benches fill up (hard to imagine), small stone walls throughout the park provide Seating as well.

Iglesia Ortodoxa San Jorge

Reviewed By Jarko2015 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This very small church looks fascinating from the outside, resembling a cheap, economy version of St Basil's in Moscow. What it's like inside, I'll never know, as it never seems to be open, no matter what day or what time I came by. Presumably that changes on Sundays, but my trip ended on Saturday, so I never saw the inside. Shame.

Casino Carnaval

Reviewed By A TripAdvisor Member

The Carnaval in Encarnacion is on every Friday and Saturday night during the festival period. You can buy tickets at the gate or from touts on the streets outside the gates however better deals are had by buying your ticket beforehand from one of many outlets downtown (includes most bottle shops). It was absolutely fantastic and I highly recommend it. Amazing costumes, floats, music and atmosphere. Surprisingly it was easy, not too crowded, sitting spaces, food, cheap drinks, friendly people. A perfect way to experience Carnaval in South America.
