Queens County Farm Museum

New York's oldest working farm was saved by local residents and is now a city and national landmark.

My wife and I have accompanied our son and daughter-in-law, and 1 1/2-year-old grandson here now twice, for a Pow-Wow and for child-centered event. Parking charge each time: $40 (!) based on number of adults in the car and age of child. At the Pow-Wow, there were plenty of food and merchandise stalls and free entertainment -- a great time was had by all. At the childrens' event, we were surprised that most attractions were extra-charge -- like $4 for one time around the pony ride, which took about two minutes. My wife and I skipped the petting zoo, too, because of the extra charges, and, with my bad back, there was nowhere nearby to sit. Picnic tables in a couple of specific spots near food trucks were all filled. No benches, at all, anywhere in the park, and not a lot of shady areas -- it's a farm, after all. So, great for the kids, not so great for grandparents.

No matter what time of year you visit this historic home and gardens, it leaves an impression. During this holiday season, the home is decorated with beautiful vintage decorations. There is an area to take pictures with Santa, as well as, a place to have refreshments. While walking through the home you could hear a pianist playing in the background. The snow covered grounds add to the setting.

Belmont Park Race Track

Reviewed By SVH823 - Hatboro, Pennsylvania

This is the 8th year we have attended the Belmont Stakes Race. The track is in relatively good condition. The staff, which is primarily temporary, was very pleasant and helpful. The price has gotten so outrageous that we will have to consider other options for next year. Admission was over $100 for grandstand seating and the parking was $40-that is ridiculous! The security check was the worst I've seen - even Pimlico does a better job. We were lucky and arrived VERY early (10:00) and had little trouble this year. Last year, it took us over 45 min to get through security - and that was an hour before 1st Post. The set-up is terrible - it should be further away from the main gate area. We were talking to people that arrived around 11:00. They said it took 1 3/4 hrs to get through.

We went there for a family outing today and we were surprised to find this wonderful gem. Although this museum appear small at first, it is not, There is a lot to see, aircraft exhibits, space exhibits, interactive exhibits, multiple floors of exhibits, a Fireman's Museum and a cafe. Today we visited the space exhibits. They have thing such as real LEM Moon Lander. space suits, rockets and much more. We also visited the airplane hanger where they a a A-6F Airplane, F-14 Tom Cat Airplane and a A-10 Warthog Airplane. There is so much to see that it will take you multiple days to explore it. There are multiple floors and a skywalk where you can see the exhibits from above the main floor. This is great place for children. There is a lot to see and learn. We will be returning.

$8 parking fee, cash only, no cards. $2 for carousel ride, and it's a seemingly longer ride than most carousels. Bathroom nearby, although I don't recall seeing changing table in men's room. Nice shaded, clean grassy areas for picnics, and playground has nice, soft, spongy surface with swings and other playground equipment. Easy on and off Southern State Parkway. There may be food concessions but I did not see them either. Regardless, recommend, will be back.

The Ohel

Here is buried arguably the greatest Jewish religious leader of the 20th century- undoubtedly the force behind the greatest and most successful movement of Jewish renewal and re affiliation and renewed commitment of the last fifty years, continuing actively to today, 21 years after his departure from this world.

His disciples have built an enclosure around the grave of the Rebbe, which is next to the one of the previous Rebbe who preceded him.

These are the graves of very holy and revered Jewish leaders- the place deserves utmost respect and decorum.

The Chabad Lubavitch have established a building on site, including memorabilia and videos of the Rebbe, and instructional inspirational material, as well as a guide for traditional observances at the memorial.

As a family with past and present connections to this Jewish movement, it was very meaningful and spiritual for us to "pay our respects" and hopefully renew and strengthen our commitments to the mission that the Rebbe promoted in his long illustrious career.

Long Island Rail Road

Decided to take the LIRR from Jamaica to Midtown rather than subway. This was around 20-25 minutes quicker. When buying a ticket at Jamaica just look for the green machines with white tracks. Here you can buy a combined airtrain and LIRR metrocard for a one off journey. This ticket will get you to Penn Station from where you can walk, bus, cab or subway to your hotel. If you plan to later use the subway you will have to buy a seperate metrocard as they are two different systems, confusing I know! Easy journey with room for luggage which cut out the traffic. $12.50 each off peak.
