Holta Canyon

Reviewed By Majav62 - Belgrade, Serbia

It is located in the region of the city of Elbasan, but it is closer to Gramsh. It is wrong to start from the direction of Elbasan, but to turn off the road to Elbasan about 20 km before Elbasan to the small town of Cerik. Navigation will guide you precisely to the canyon. A shortcut across the village of Cekin can confuse you for a while. The shortcut is about 2km long and has a poorer asphalt surface after which you will again be on a great local road to the canyon. Your asphalt road leads up to 500m from the entrance to the canyon. It is safe to park car regardless of the construction site nearby. Holta contains cold, sulfur opaque water. You need shoes that you can wet and that do not slip. I do not recommend that it is desirable to have a helmet on your head because the cliff in one part of the canyon is 150m high. Due to the cold of the river, you will like a neoprene suit. I didn't have it and it didn't bother me because you will forget about the cold due to the beauty and excitement.... If you do not have adequate footwear or clothing, you will only be able to enter the first 100m of the canyon. It will get colder as you go deeper into the canyon and be ready for it. The air currents from the canyon are warm and don't let it fool you even though it's summer. You will enjoy the forest of water, the beautiful river, the vertical cliffs, the multitude of small and large caves and the adventure that will take you to the true essence of nature. You will feel its strength, beauty and permanence. You may have to swim or just cross the Holt River. I did not reach the narrowest part of the canyon because I was afraid that night would fall and that is why I came out of the canyon. If you want to visit the whole canyon, I suggest you come early in the morning. WARNING: -Enter the canyon at your own risk - You don't need a guide - water shoes are obligatory, but a helmet and a neoprene suit are desirable even in summer -FOLLOW THE WEATHER FORECAST: if there was rain in the Holta river basin a few days before your planned arrival, it is better and safer to give up because the river is DANGEROUS TO LIFE IN CASE OF PRECIPITATION. On the way, at the exit of the canyon, there are two restaurants next to the canyon. I was in a secluded one that has a cafe and a pool. Wonderful warming up after the icy Holt.

I was there to watch an international friendly match (Albania-Norway). It was raining all the time but the stadium looked beautiful and the atmosphere was great. Better if it would be covered for the fans.
