Crescent Bend Nature Park

Reviewed By Joseph R - Converse

Crescent Bend will never be mistaken for McAllister Park, but if all you want to do is take a walk among nature, Crescent Bend does just fine. The trails are decent enough for the occasional walker. Serious hikers won't be impressed though. My wife likes the park during the week for visiting the two bird blinds and the nice variety of birds that can be seen there. For folks living in the Converse, Universal City, Live Oak areas it's still pretty handy for the last minute plan.

LoneStar Handgun Shooting Range

Reviewed By John V

On vacation with the family in Texas. The weather and season was wrong for tubing so we decided to get lessons on shooting guns. Although there were closer ranges to our timeshare, I wanted the ambiance of an outdoor range.
Our lesson was taught by Jaime, a retired infantryman with 30 years in the military. He was awesome. He taught us about the guns, how to shoot them and gave some great advice on life. It was an honor and pleasure to learn from this man. He left us with something that his father told him, "I expect you to stand out in life but I do expect you to stand up when you see an injustice." He is also the most patriotic man I have met in a long time.
The two women in the shop were also super polite and gave us a list of suggestions of things to do.
The gun rentals were $20 but you could swap if you wanted to try another without paying more. The ammo seemed affordable at $27 a box of 50 rounds.
We had a great time and I would recommend the lone star handgun range to anyone.

Live Oak Main City Park

Reviewed By Stephanlee1 - San Antonio, Texas

Growing up this park filled a great deal of my leisure time particularly the fishing at the pond and lake. There was really not much to this place when I first started coming as a child. By the time I left high school it had been improved significantly and over the years the city has done an amazing job making this place extremely nice for everyone to enjoy a multitude of things.

Situated on 75 acres this park boasts:
A football field, basketball court, three baseball fields, multiple playgrounds, two restroom facilities, a lake, a pond, picnic areas, bbq pit, gazebo, and a large covered open air pavilion. This park is also handicapped accessible.

Adjacent to the park and essentially considered an extension of the park is one of the best "frisbee golf" courses I have ever seen which extends through the forested areas for what I would guess to be well over a mile if not more.

Some extra special bonus's at this park. If you are off to the side of the park near the frisbee golf area during the right hours you may spot families of deer that do not spook all that easy. The other bonus is that on the backside of the earthen dam you can slide down on pieces of cardboard like a huge slide.

The Alamo

Established in 1718 as Mission San Antonio de Valero, for over 300 years the former mission now known as the Alamo has been a crossroads of history. Having existed under six flags of independent nations and served as a garrison for five different armies, the Alamo has a rich history and a heritage to inspire Texans and people around the world. Although the Alamo is best known as the site of the 1836 Battle of the Alamo, all 300 years of Alamo history are vital to our story. Visitors can take a guided battlefield tour, rent a self-guided audio tour, walk through the historic Alamo Church and Long Barrack Museum, listen to a history talk given by an Alamo Interpreter, participate in living history demonstrations, watch a documentary on the history of the Alamo, and much more. Admission to the Alamo is free, but there is a charge for guided and audio tours.

Initially I was disappointed because contrary to what they advertised, they didn't have any hearing assistive devices for me. (I was told none of the worked). After I complained to the manager, it turned out they DID work but the person checking them didn't know what he was doing... I was given a couple of passes and the manager handled the situation in a very professional manner... BTW, I took my grandkids to see "The Lion" and it was an excellent movie....

This is the only tour of the missions that you should consider. After carefully looking at all the missions tours available, I picked this one for our first trip to the San Antonio area. We wanted to learn about history of the missions and be able to see as much as possible. We booked it with Shelly and she made sure that we had our tour, on time, picking us up at our hotel, giving us the details of the history of the missions, along with updated interesting details about the missions since their beginning. At each stop we were in awe to be walking along these pathways. Shelly's professionalism and knowledge made this historic tour of the missions one we will never forget. She was also able to drop us off at our next planned stop and give us some advice for a lunch stop. (Which was excellent!)

Woodcrest Park

Reviewed By Heather F - San Antonio, Texas

This park is definitely a hidden gem! I just learned about it after living in the area for 3 years and it is our new favorite playground (and we have visited a TON). I love that the play area is not right by the parking lot and since it is covered in artificial turf, everything looks so pretty and green (and I don't have to worry about my toddlers throwing mulch or getting it stuck in their sandals...big plus!). The play area is huge, with shade and even a shaded area with fitness equipment for the adults. There is a playscape for younger kids and one for bigger kids, so it's perfect for my 2 and 3 year old. There are nice bathrooms, walking trails with lots of trees and picnic tables. It's really a lovely and peaceful area for everyone to enjoy- I highly recommend it!
