Off the beaten track but worth venturing into. Beautiful hill walks and lovely wide river. Near enough to heritage sites (like Fatima) to make it worth while.

Dornes itself is a wonderful small village definitely worth visiting, and the church dominates the village's landscape. The church is built in the typical style but what makes is outstanding is the adjacent Templar tower that one can actually climb, too. Try getting here at sunset when all nearby hills are bathing in the sunset rays. Breathtaking.

Lago Azul

One of the main tourist destinations in the region where beauty and hospitality are offered by the Lago Azu. There is am Anchorage and gasoline for boats.

Reviewed By rhysw552016 - Sydney, Australia

The road to access this was a bit minimalist but the lake was nice and had different pools for different ages as well as life guards (not the sort we have in Australia, but still reassuring). There was a pontoon over the lake for the access to the pools, but this can get a bit hot in warmer weather so take thongs. The area of the lake that I went to was a bit short on places to sit out of the sun or keep your belongings or even have a picnic, so this an area where they could improve immensely.

Stunning gorge with crystal swimming pools. Well worth the drive, and the walk down the road to get there. Steep but you can do it in flip-flops, though the same can't be said of the 5km walk along the river.

When you are arriving at Dornes, just follow the mean street in the direction of the Tower, and so you will have the “Tourist Office” on your left hand side. The Office was closed on the moment of our arrival, it is small but nice and very clean, it has also on the right side a Terrace from where you have a nice view over the water below where the boats are and the river Beaches.

O Casulo

Reviewed By PedroRBC

José Malhoa one of the most important portuguese painters that lived between the 19th and 20th century came to Figueiró dos Vinhos invietd by an uncle and felt in love with the region. He decided to build this little palace nicknamed the Cocoon because of its cosyness! Today it's a well preserved place where you can get local information at the reception desk and also about the painter, his life and this nice building. There is an Art Center close to it and also a Chess Museum, besides a garden surronding the house.
