Lake of the Red Cedars Museum

I was raised in Cedar Lake but haven't lived there in about 30 years. I first went to this museum two years ago and was pleasantly surprised by the size (20+ dedicated rooms with different themes), the quality of the collections and the knowledge of the docents. There is even a huge mastodon bone they found on the lake! The most recent change was an old barber shop they physically moved with all the equipment from the early days. Everyone of all ages will be sure to find something that really interests them. Its a wonderful way to spend a rainy day.

Shrine of the Christ's Passion

Imagine the opportunity of sitting with Jesus at the last supper table. The apostles have not yet arrived, so it's just you and Jesus. Or how about being witness to Pontius Pilate looking down on Jesus and he turns and asks you, what do you say? Do you want to set him free or do you say crucify him? That's what you get when you go to St John's Indiana to see the shrine of Christ's passion. You're actually put in these situations and it can have a profound effect on you. I hope all Christians take the time to walk the different stations.

Harvest Tyme Pumpkin Patch

This attraction was such a pleasant surprise -- had dozens of rides and games and no lines (roller coaster, trains, hay ride, monkey barrels, banana ride, cornfield mazes, playground, etc.). Other similar pumpkin festivals are overcrowded and expensive. This one is worth the extra drive to get to.

Escape Room NWI

Reviewed By Misty D

My husband and I are avid game room enthusiasts. We were making a trip to Chicago and wanted to hit a few on our way. We decided on this one as one of our stops. It was noon and I was in the process of booking the 1:30 room. I didn't put "2" people accidentally so I went back to fix it and the game was gone. I reset, exited and reentered....nothing. it was gone. So my husband called and they asked how many people....he said 2. They informed him that it takes their employees that amount of time to get there when a room is booked. I find it difficult to believe 5 mitues would have made a huge difference. Out of the dozens of rooms we have been to, never have we ran across this type of scenerio. My advice would be to book way in advance to ensure someone can make it there to run the game for you.

Grand Old Lady (The Lake County Courthouse)

Reviewed By Allen21096 - Chicago, Illinois

This courthouse was first built as a log structure in 1837, only to be replaced by a frame structure in 1849. The central portion including the clock tower was began in 1878 and dedicated in 1880. The towers were added in 1907 and dedicated in 1909. Because of the courthouse, the square always looks great and helps to make the town square area a bit more vibrant. There is a small museum that is dedicated to John Dillinger and to his era when criminal gangs like his were actually lauded by people. It did take some time for law enforcement at the time to come to grips with what was happening in the 1920s and 1930s. If you are near Crown Point make the stop, though I wouldn't make a separate field trip to it. You may also want to call to verify the hours.

I love going to Merrillville, IN. It's a short drive from Chicago and there are lots of hotel options if I want to do a quick, cheap getaway. It's in a prime location with tons of lodging, food, and entertainment that is easily accessible. The mall is absolutely fantastic with so many stores to choose from. I can never visit all of the stores that I want in a single day. I love the options! The mall is always nice and clean and there are never any rowdy people when I visit.
