Manuele spent a whole day with my husband and I travelling around the Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza area. Our first stop was a sheep farm where they produce Pecorino Cheese. We saw the sheep, peeked into the dairy where they make the cheese and then tasted a few of their cheeses which were fabulous! Then we were off to Santa Giulia Winery for wine tasting and lunch. This was an small, family run winery just outside of Montalcino. Not only do they make their own wine and olive oil, but they raise a few pigs and produce their own prosciutto, capacola, and salami. The Brunello wine was excellent and lunch of homemade pasta with Pecorino cheese, bruschetta, and all their own meats was beyond delicious...seriously one of the best meals we had in Italy! We stopped in the quaint hilltop town of Pienza for about an hour walk around. Our last stop was Montepulciano where we visited the Talosa Winery for tasting and to view their underground tunnels where they age the wine in casks. During our 8 hours with Manu, he kept up a steady stream of historical facts and wine production details with enthusiasm. It was a fabulous time. Manu was excellent in replying to emails prior to the trip and quoting a price (400Euros for 8 hour private tour for the two of us). He was on time and we thoroughly enjoyed our day in this beautiful part of Italy. Thanks!!

Alberto organized a wonderful day visiting two amazing wineries, a delicious lunch in a small town, and views of the countryside. With some very straightforward emails, we were able to arrange pick up from where we were staying (in Florence) and didn't have to worry about driving directions, etc. We had a wonderful private experience as part of our honeymoon and learned so much from Alberto's expertise and local experience!

Fattoria Santa Vittoria

This is one of those places that are so good you hate to tell anyone for fear everybody else will flock there! But the place is so charming that it deserves a fantastic review. As an Ariturismo, you will stay in the building right in the middle of rows and rows of grape vines. The building is where, historically, the farm workers lived. The first story wing has been made into two, one bedroom suites. Each has a living/dining room with a sitting area with a couch, and a small, but fully functioning kitchen area, and a dining table. The kitchen is furnished with a two burner gas stove, a refrigerator with a small freezer compartment, and a sink. There are sets of dishes, glassware, and cutlery. One could not hope for a better set up for self catering, or, you can pay a little extra fee per resident and a local woman will deliver breakfast at the time you desire. There is also a separate bedroom, with a Queen size bed, wardrobe, and an on-suite bathroom. Largest bathroom we encountered in Italy with a full size walk in shower! While the suites have been modernized, the Owners have used antique furniture to give the real feeling of a 19th century farmhouse. Just outside is a small table and chairs and a charcoal grill. There is a beautiful open area with overhanging trees for shade, lawn chairs, a large, lovely swimming pool, and a gorgeous fairytale like view over the Tuscan countryside. Extremely quiet and peaceful. Very centrally located to all the wonderful Medieval Hilltowns via very good secondary roads. Very close to Cortona, Lucignano, and Arrezzo. But the best part of our stay was talking with and getting help and suggestions from the owners Marta and Mauro. Among many other things, Marta runs the Agriturismo, and her husband Mauro runs the farm and winery. We booked a private tour of the winery with Mauro and beside seeing the very historical side of the winery with roots back to the Etruscans, we learned tons about the history of wine making in Tuscany, new uses for historic grape varieties, and the production of Vin Santo. Loved it! And the best for last. Both Marta and Mauro are accomplished and passionate cooks! We booked a private dinner for just us ( in the summer they do outside family style dinners under a grape arbor!). Mauro did both the cooking and serving. Each course was paired with a specific wine from their winery. First course was a fantastic Antpasto plate with four kinds of Bruschetta, Herb sautéed egg plant, and prosciutto. Second course (primi) was a locally popular pasta called "Picci" which is a sort of fat spaghetti, which Mauro hand rolled using wheat grown on the farm. Served with a Bolognaise sauce. The third course was a kind of meat and cheese "roll up" served in a bed of lettuce. Mauro called them something like "eggs in the nest". They were OMG good! Lastly he served us a home made sorbet. Folks, this was not only the best meal we had during our three weeks in Italy, but we both agreed that it might have been the best meal we have ever had! This place is very special. It is not the Ritz, or a luxury resort, it is truly a working farm with all the real experience and warmth that that entails. We would go back for a longer stay any time we can.

Famiglia Buccelletti Winery

The Buccelletti wine-estate is a producer of quality red and white wines and excellent extra-virgin olive oil, located in the Valle di Chio, Tuscany. Buccelleti is a young company that is committed to enhance the potentials of a territory that has always been suitable to vine-growing, also through its brand new line-up of spirits, including grappas and brandies. Our wines are produced with grapes harvested from over 12 acres of vineyard surface. The vinification is done in the Santa Cristina winery, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria. Our extra-virgin olive oil is pressed from olives grown and hand-picked on our 30 acre olive grove.

We found this through TripAdviser as we were staying nearby, and can only recommend it as a little gem. You need to book in advance but we were very well looked after in this very small family run winery near Castiglion Fiorentino. The wines were varied (amazingly so for such a small property), and the best ones really very good. We came away with an order for several cases!

I'm not a religious person, but this is a place to visit. Impressive to see the small cell used by Franciscus.
It is also a nice walk from Cortona (4.5km) with some beautiful views of the valley. Don't take the Sp34 main road, but a little road leaving from Porta Montanina to Torreone and from there to Eremo Le Celle. You will have much less traffic to take care of.

If you are visiting the town then the museum is definitely worth the visit.
I was impressed by the exposed layers of history that you walk around on platforms.
The exhibits have legends in English which is very helpful.
Call me strange, but just seeing millennia old Roman plumbing is always amazing and fascinating!

We stayed at Agritourismo Santo Stefano for two weeks at the end of July in a group.
The 3 apartments are nicely furnished and clean and tidy. The view up the Val di Chio is stunning with Castiglione Fiorentino on the hill in the distance.
The swimming pool is a nice size and there are plenty of chairs and loungers.
The owners Antonio and Marinella are lovely people and are always on hand to give advice on the local area.
Antonio produces his own wines, olive oil and honey. All of the wines pass the taste test, especially the Senaia vino rosso.
Marinella runs a cookery school and regularly you are invited to sample her culinary skills in the way of a evening meal of 3 courses that together with Antonio's wines make for a lovely dining experience.
We will be returning again in the future.

Pinacoteca di Castiglion Fiorentino

Reviewed By hulltschmidt - New York City, New York

Tourism or the idea that tourists have a few needs does not seem to have caught on. The tourist office closed twice and not much in the way of "tourists this way"
However, when wondering around the town, just after 4, we came across the Pinacotec - just opening (near the big tower). It was worth the stroll up hill, some great pieces and, helpful and staff.
