Basilica of Santa Maria

Reviewed By Fionnuala22 - Belfast, United Kingdom

Dominating the charming and atmospheric town of Castello d'Empuries, the Basilica speaks of a time when religion and politics were closely intertwined, and the local Counts were hugely ambitious. Architecturally interesting, wide a huge and wide nave, containing the tombs of several local rulers and various side chapels, this is a must see. The Basilica also contains a small ( pay to enter) museum of church artefacts, and we found the church personnel very welcoming and helpful.

Castello d'Empuries

Chanced upon this town when I went cycling. It is a real gem, beautiful architecture, amazing basilica and plenty of bars and eateries peppered around the place. Nice to stroll around. We also liked eating in Bar J&R in the main square, good food and great service. This is a town definitely worth visiting, it is surprising given its location, didn't expect it to be so nice.

La Farigola

Reviewed By James C - London, United Kingdom

This place is fantastic, despite its unlikely location at the bottom of an unattractive block and next to some empty shops. Staff show you the catch of the day. The chef cooks it to perfection. He gave us the choice of tasting our way through much of the menu. So we did. The wine is very well priced, and of excellent quality. It would be hard to imagine much better fish and seafood, and the contrast with the location could hardly be greater. Go!

Ecomuseu Farinera de Castello d'Empuries

Ours is utterly unique; we have maintained industrial heritage made up of the flour factory machinery from the end of the 19th century, and we have also conserved natural heritage, such as the ‘Rec del Moli', a water channel dating back to the medieval ages. The building, along with the channel, was acquired in 1995 by the Castello d’Empuries Town Hall to convert it into an ecomuseum.

Reviewed By auntieshaz21 - Lanton, France

It was interesting to find out the history of the industrial revolution in flour making. Everything is explained in different languages including English. It cost 7.60 euros for two although dogs aren't allowed and finding some shaded parking was difficult. The additional exhibit on the local wildlife - land and sea was very interesting.
