Cartaxo (Portuguese pronunciation: [kɐɾˈtaʃu]) is a municipality in the district of Santarém in continental Portugal. The population in 2011 was 24,462, in an area of 158.17 km². The urbanized centre of Cartaxo had a population of 9,507 in 2001.

This tour takes you to the heart of Obidos region and with a history linked to wine and sparkling wine production dating back to the XV Century, the Quinta dos Loridos estate is a unique place, where tranquillity and nature play a special role. It is from these vineyards that the grapes are picked for the production of top quality sparkling wines - those of the Loridos brand . Produced in the age old winery, a rod-press dating from the XVII Century can still be found here. The Classic Method ("Methode Champenoise") is used to produce the wine, the whole process of which is conducted manually. This is followed by a period of ageing in the cellar. The surroundings of the cellar perfectly complement its purpose: terraced Gardens, a lake, a forest, vineyards, and the largest oriental Gardens in Europe, the impressive Buddha Eden. Buddha Eden Garden: With circa 35 hectares, the garden was created and devised by the Comendador Jose Berardo, in response to the destruction of the Buddhas of Banyan, in which one of the greatest acts of cultural barbarity took place, erasing masterpieces of late-period Gandhara art. From Buddhas , pagodas, terracotta statues and the various carefully-placed sculptures which can be found among the Gardens, it is estimated that some six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this monumental work of art. There are seven hundred hand-painted terracotta soldiers, each of them unique, copies of those which were buried, some of them 2,200 years ago. At the central lake, KOI (Japanese carp) fish can be seen, and sculpted dragons rise out of the water. The central staircase is the focal point of the garden, where the golden Buddhas offer you a calm welcome. This is the Quinta dos Loridos estate, a place which awakens the senses...

A wonderful green space and chance to breath in the country air. The park is wonderfully maintained and well worth a visit. For a relaxing day in the country it's tough to beat (there's even a little train that takes you around if you don't feel like walking!)

The area of the town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall. Óbidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture; its streets, squares, walls and its castle are a popular tourist destination.
Each July Óbidos castle hosts a traditional 'Medieval Market'. For two weeks the castle and the surrounding town recreate the spirit of medieval Europe.

This garden/park is situated inside the most ancient part of Santarém. I go there now and then since my childhood and I can state that it's a place that underwent several changes over the years. From the castle there are only some walls remaining and even those aren't very old. However it's a graceful garden, with an amazing view over the Tagus riverbanks. In the Summer it's a great place to walk, play with the kids and eat some icecream. It has an interesting museum inside (with paid entrance).

The Marinhas de Sal is a Salt exploration area changed to a gastronomic and art work zone with tradicional portuguese and local products as the salt flower the old lady´s coffee and cuscurões. You can learn how they extracted the salt since old times, have a very cosy dinner in a wood house and do some souvenir shopping

this unique studio house was designed and built by one of the first well know photographers in Europe.. built in an ornate 19th century style the top floor/studio has huge windows which can be shaded to reflect just the right amount of light. Beware the museum /studio is operated by the municipality so hours may be inconsistent...but it well worth the drive to see this amazing place.

This small place has fantastic falcons of all species. Behind the videos and historical items on display, the people working here are really falcon passionates. We enjoy the fly and catch demonstration, and even more spending time with the falconer.

EVOA is situated in the Natural Reserve of the Tagus Estuary, which is included in the Natura 2000 network since 1980 and is recognized as a Ramsar Site. Since April 2013, the visitor can enjoy the wild birds, mostly in three Freshwater wetlands, with 70 ha. The Visitor Centre has an exhibition area and a cafeteria where visitors can enjoy the space and the beautiful scenery.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit to EVOA. We had a guided visit, both to the exhibits and to the field. It was so absorbing we spent 4 hours instead of the planned 2:30, and time just flew.
The visit started with a movie about EVOA. I give high marks to the photography and the very clear narrative. Next, we were guided through the exhibition. Our very knowledgeable guide nicely complemented the charts, photos and text displayed! This was followed by a few "rules of the road" for the field visit and off we went.
It is quite an easy walk, as the path is totally flat. On a nice sunny day like today, wearing a hat is advisable, as are (any time) wearing good walking shoes, trousers and long sleeves. I should also have taken some water with me.
We made three stops at different lagoons and from the observation booths we were able to see and photograph a large variety of birds, some rarely seen (beginners luck?). This was in addition to many more seen during the walk. Again, our guide was invaluable, always ready with explanations and setting up the spotting scope she carried all along, helping us to easily distinguish the several species. We could also see tracks from various animals, and hear some bird calls. The richness and diversity of the fauna is amazing, and we were told it keeps changing throughout the year, so re-visiting should be nice.
EVOA is quite near Lisbon and easy to find. The path from the main road to EVOA is well marked. The price is fair, considering the amount of information, variety of birds that can be seen, the facilities, and the fact we could actually have spent the whole day, which we didn't know. It was a memorable afternoon, and I'd like to repeat it.

The highlights are the locomotives in the roundhouse and the royal train. Very easy to get there by train; it's visible from the station.
