Lake Covadonga

Reviewed By NotOnTwitter - Cambridge, United Kingdom

We travelled up from Covadonga to the twin lakes on 7th October 2017. Despite the weather bring glorious, it is now “low season” which meant cars could drive up to the lakes again. The guidebook we had mentioned nothing more than the lakes being 12KM or so past Covadonga, take the “other” exit at the roundabout rather than the one that leads to the Basilica.
What it doesn’t mention is that this road is really narrow in places, with steep drop offs on the passenger side as you travel up. If you time it right, and travel when everyone else is going up, and no one is coming down, I imagine it’s a breeze.
We travelled up just after a mass at the Basilica had let out, so it was busy in both directions. Being a British driver in a small hire car in the wrong side of the road, I am perhaps more aware of being vulnerable, but the 4x4s thundering down really do take no prisoners and you are best advising any passengers not to look out if the window. I’ve driven over here in Spain for two weeks now, on a lot of rural roads, and I can honestly say the driving on this road was the worst I’ve seen, and I’ve driven round Potes!
Once parked, however, and a little time taken to recover, it really is lovely. The lakes look beautiful, but you are only allowed to look, and on a clear day such as we had, you really can see all the way out to the ocean. The paved path from the car park to the lakes is not too steep, although the stepped areas are quite high and shorter legs might feel it after a while. There’s very little shade so suntan lotion or sunblock is a must. There is a little restaurant but it’s gets full very quickly so a packed lunch (if you wish to eat there) might be better.
Leave at the same time as everyone else, when cars have stopped driving up, and it’s a blast. Passengers can also be less nervous as a crash will simply result in them being smashed into the mountainside rather than being rolled off the edge.
Five stars for the view, but one taken off for the hellish drive.

We went as a family with 2 teenage sons looking for something different and fun to this school on the recommendations of Spanish friends in Oviedo. The Escuela Asturiana de Piraguismo is the original adventure company in Arriondas and was started by 2 brother expert canoeists that pioneered the descent of the Sella river.
The school is located in a beautifully restored mill house which uses the original tunnel into the river to launch the canoes. We were struck by how well organised and efficient the school was. Though it was their busiest day of the year everything moved quickly and we were launched into the river with little fuss a lovely picnic lunch for the very reasonable fee.
Much fun & laughter ensued with teenagers splashing their way through shallows and paddling furiously through rapids. ( no wifi requests we heard for 6 hours!!)
There were multiple lovely spots to stop and picnic & the option of 3 different collections points along the river depending on fitness levels.
The lads stopped off at a popular river ledge to jump and swim with other teenagers while we enjoyed a beer from a river side bar.
After an amazing few hours of not excessive exertion but still a good work out we landed at our agreed collection point & returned via the school bus back to clean hot showers followed with a nice glass of wine and tapas in the beautiful Gardens of Piaguismo. Walking into the town which was buzzing with bars and nice hotels we all agreed this was a highlight of our trip to Asturias and that Escuela de Piraguismo ran a fabulous school with many brilliant activity options suitable for all the family.
Our only regret was we didn't have time to do the sea kayaking and canoning offered but we shall return to beautiful Asturias and the lovely Piraguismo Escuela

Such a lovely spot to visit while in the area. When you park, there's a nice souvenir shop and a mini cafe that serves surprisingly good coffee. The platform itself offers breathtaking views of surrounding areas. A tip: when there and heading down to the beach, there's a secluded recreational areas about a kilometer or two from this place (with a wooden sign). Try it!!

A beautiful church in a spectacular setting.
Outside is a nice statue of Pelayo (although you can find him everywher in northern Spain) and the outside of the church does look impressive.
Inside it also looks spectacular - full of historic artifacts, carvings, altarpieces, etc. We visited in the afternoon, a weekday and off-peak season and there were very few people around.
It is well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Adventure Tourism: kayak, canyoning, ...

There are many companies that run canoe/ kayak experiences on the River Sella. We chose this one after Reading reviews and corresponding with Antonio. They have a first class set up. We were attracted by their use of back rests/ supports in the kayaks. I think they are the only company to do so. After 18km paddling it is a real benefit and very comfortable. The staff are terrific, friendly, helpful and speak English. Good changing rooms, hot showers and a really good picnic. Add in the equipment and a pick up to return to base and for 25 Euro each you have fabulous value. We had a great day. We were lucky that we went on a Monday. We saw only two kayaks all day. On Sunday there were apparently 300! The water is crystal clear. There are many large Trout. There are gently fun Rapids. You can get stuck/ beach in shallows. The water is lovely and there are Beaches and cafes for stops. We were only going to go 8 km but enjoyed it so much we went the whole 18km.
