Because the city of Brisbane is so far inland to get to the white sandy Beaches is a bit of a trek for the city folk unless you drive up towards the Sunshine Coast or down to the Gold Coast. A short drive from the city brings you to Bribie Island which is a small area accessible by bridge with a retirement and holiday style atmosphere. On the coastal side there is a beautiful white sandy beach. There are plenty of cafes close by and the swimming is calm rather than surf style waves. Ideal for the kids. This area is great for all ages. It has all the amenities and a great day out away from the city.

Bribie Island Seaside Museum

My husband and I spent a couple of hours here. The museum is terrific. Learnt so much about the occupation of the island by US soldiers during WW2. I wasn't aware of this prior to visiting here. We watched each of the documentaries in the cute little theatre. Wonderful film footage from the early days of the island and the life of renowned artist Ian Fairweather. What an interesting man he was. Entry is free to the museum. A must visit.

Woorim Beach

Reviewed By Hazel K - Bribie Island, Australia

This is a lovely well appointed area with lots of picnic tables and most of them are covered for your comfort. There are lookout seats above the beach where you can sit and watch the world go by. A few coffee houses with a variety of eats and of course delicious coffee of all sorts. There is a small playground for the children and change rooms and toilets for everyone. The Surf Club is nearby and a nice place to go for a meal and it is also equipped with poker machines. It is two stories high with a large verandah as well as inside tables for meals. The verandah has a great view of the ocean and as well as regular meals have a variety of half priced meals for seniors and the meals are delicious.
Lots of carvings scattered throughout the Woorim beach area and a little shopping centre with a hotel, IGA, a chemist and several other businesses. And it is also a short drive to the main Bribie beach area with lots of coffee shops and usually a market on each Sunday.
If you like the quiet life, this is a good place for you to visit. There are life guards on the beach and in a lookout where they can see if people are having problems in the water.

Buckleys Hole Conservation Park

There are several good viewing points overlooking the lake. These let you see a wide variety of birds easily. When we were there (mid-August) we saw a pair of black swans with last year's cygnets, grebes, coots, moorhens, cormorants, grey teal, Pacific black duck, gull-beaked terns and a hardhead (whistling duck). Behind us, in the trees, were sulphur-crested cockatoos and ibis. There is also a walking path around part of the lake and you can see the sea just beyond the lake. A great place to spend a little time watching birdlife.

I found all the "internal" Beaches of Bribie Island somewhat disappointing. The hype was about safe, sand Beaches but the reality was thin slivers of sand and brownish water with seaweed and jellyfish. Not that it stopped me having a swim. And the people fishing seemed to be having a relaxing time. The best part of the beach was walking along it at sunset.
