Chateau de Bouillon

One of the most impressive remains of feudalism in Europe and the oldest feudal vestige in Belgium. Its origins go back to the 8th century. It is a key account for the medieval architecture and is famous for the 1st crusade, lead by Godfrey of Bouillon. The Castle was used for military purposes until 1830. From the top of the main tower, you can admire a wonderful view on the Semois river and its meanders. Included in the visit : falconry show and permanent didactic exhibition. Also included : permanent exhibition "Scriptura", the history of writing from the Middel Ages until the XXst century.

Took our 7 year old grand daughter to explore this excellent chateau/castle. With its fine views of the surrounding countryside and small passageways. More details on some of the rooms would have been helpful, but the guide book fills in missing detail. One is left to explore on ones own so own pace dictates the length of the visit

A really disappointing visit. First we had to wait quite some time before the visit could start. Then the visit consisted of some video animations. The second one was cut by a power failure. We then had to wait over 20 minutes for the restart. Very limited information. In the expo after the animation, quite some things were shabby and broken. Compare this for instance with Historium in Brugge, which has a similar concept...day and night

Abbaye Clairefontaine

A nice and easy walk to do when visiting Bouillon. The surroundings of the monastery are really spectacular, it is overlooking a small valey and the Semois river. You might go there also by car, but it's much more pleasant to do on foot. The monastery itself is not open to visitors(if I am not mistaken, at least it wasn't when we went there, but in any case, probably you are not missing anything it is a sort of 1960's architecture) but there is a small monastic shop (open approximately 10-17, except on Mondays) when you can buy freshly baked bread and cakes made at this very place, together with a big range of products produced by other monasteries of the region...There is a possibility to return to Bouillon through the forest, to make your little walk more varied...or you may continue little further along the river in the direction of the meander and the hill called "Tombeau de géant"... We really enjoyed this short little walk at the sunset, arriving to the monastery shop just in time before it closed and purchasing a delicious apricot cake. The entire walk may be done even with small children or buggies (provided you take the small road and not the forest track).

Ducal Museum (Musee Ducal)

Reviewed By Loiseau - UK

We popped into the Musée Ducal on the way down the hill from visiting Bouillon's mighty castle. Everything is beautifully presented on three floors as you pass through a series of numbered rooms comtaining small religious objects, exquisite Middle Eastern ceramics, local archaeological finds, and items illustrating the history and skills of iron foundries in the area. We were only sorry that there were not many labels on the exhibits to tell us their provenance or their age.
The two final rooms are back on the ground floor; the first is a collection of unusual objects whose functions you are invited to guess - before checking a nearby document (at present only in Dutch or French) to see if you were right; the other contains paintings by a Bouillon artist from the time of the Impressionists, depicting the town under different aspects.

Bouillon Wildlife Park

You really have to be motivated to go to this park. We drove around for a while before being able to locate it. The setting of the park is quite pleasant, you can walk for about 2 hours, there are lots of trees, and there were very few people when we went (it was raining, that might be the reason). But I felt really sad, some animals are in tiny enclosures. A jaguar was in a cage. The ostriches had no place to run. Some monkeys had only a couple of branches to play, not one single leaf. The good thing are the explanations about every animal (in French, Dutch and English), but still ... we won't go back, even though my daughter enjoyed it.

Semois Kayak

A trip in Kayak, Canoe or Stand up paddle : the best way to discover the Ardennes in Belgium. A nice activity to do alone or in groups (family or friends)! You can also rent pedalos.

We enjoyed the kayaking. The river is very scenic and fun. The owner is a jerk. We had trouble getting out of the kayaks at the wharf at the end of our trip due to the fast flowing water. We had to continue onto their next drop off point some 3ks downriver after kayaking 18ks. There was nobody at either finishing point there to assist. Instead of offering some apology he wanted to charge us extra for the longer trip. Upon returning to buillon we passed the original drop off point and watched countless others experiencing difficulty with some falling into the river. Do the kayak with another company.

Kayak les Epinoches

Reviewed By rakadactyl - Derby, United Kingdom

We had a lovely afternoon on the river thanks to Kayak les Epinoches. The bloke running it was lovely and friendly, although visitors will need a basic understanding of French. Also there was no safety talk so if you have no kayaking experience it may feel a bit like being thrown in the deep end (the depth of the water being little more than waist deep for the whole trip though, not so much the case). The kayaks used are big and stable so well suited to beginners, and you can just float along with the gentle current of the river if you don't fancy any hard work. My partner and I went from Satay, which was a 7km trip. The scenery was stunning and the whole trip was so tranquil and relaxing. We were very keen to go again on one of the longer trips but the owners seemed to do a disappearing act, so still not entirely sure what the situation is with their opening times.
