THE LONGEST CHURCH OF THE NETHERLANDS The great fire of 1552 destroyed much of the medieval church of Saint John. Shortly after the disaster, the council commissioned the reconstruction of the most startling church of Holland. With 123 meters it is also the longest church in The Netherlands THE 72 STAINED-GLASS WINDOWS ARE WORLD-FAMOUS Entering the Church of St. John, one falls silent at the sight of the majestic space with the 72 world-famous stained-glass windows. That first experience will only get stronger when you see the marvellous light by the 'Dutch Masters' invading the Church. The rich history of Holland can be read in the large windows. It is a beginning of an impressive discovery along biblical and historical scenes of human emotions. Then you understand that the Gouda St. John is one of the highest rated attractions in the Netherlands!
Worth a visit to see the stained glass windows which are amazing. Good visitor audio system in different languages.

Two ladies and one dog in a "whisper boat" - beautiful!
Easy to follow the signs and well worth the time. Quiet, beautiful - a little get away to this beautiful bird paradise.
We rented our boat in Noorden, but went to the lovely little town of Nieuwkoop later for lunch.

We rented a boat to go around the canals and the lake. It was fun and a nice slow cruse which was very relaxing two hours.

Entrance fees are already steep, so why charge exorbitant €6,95. We're not located centrally so parking fee feels unnecessary.
That said, we arrived in the afternoon. With our Museumkaart free entrance. Great addition to the museumkaart!
Quite a stunning place. Nicely laid out by era. We did a quick tour around the park but next time likely will spent some more time.
Gladiator show nice for kids, skip it otherwise.

When you visit Boskoop in the Netherlands, you definitely have to come to PlantenTuin Esveld. PlantenTuin Esveld is one of the most well-known nurseries in Boskoop. Our nursery is one of the few in this village that has public access and sells plants to individuals. Come over and strawl along thousands of different species. You can buy plants for your garden or just take a walk through our Japanese maple garden. The Japanese maple garden was founded in 1865 and houses a number of very old beautiful trees. The fairy-tale like location is worth a visit.. and the good news is... it's totally free to walk around the premises. Besides walking there is a possibility to go on boat trips (reservation required, €5 pp) and have coffee, lunch or homemade pastries in our coffee- and teahouse.
PLANTENTUIN ESVELD offers rare scrubs and trees and offers species that can be bought at few other nurseries. I really enjoyed the collection of japanese maples in the "ACERETUM" maple collection. There is a collection of lonicera and azalea as well.

We were exploring the area by car and came across this place. We don't speak Dutch but recognise "apple tart" in any language on the board outside. It ticked all boxes. Tea, tart, very friendly owners, comfortable interior, lovely outside Seating and a great location.Thank you for your kind words, and your visit to our tea garden. We are proud that our apple pie itself is found internationally ;-) until the next time. Rebecca & Juerd

The museum is on the main road some 5 miles East from Gouda.
To get inside you have to ring the bell at the front door which will be opened by the guide and locked behind you for safety reasons. When inside you are catapulted back in time as the house was left as it was in 1923 when the last owner, Madam Dowager Paulina le Fèvre de Montigny - Bisdom van Vliet, died childless. In her last will and testament she decided that the house should be kept in the state as it was in 1923 and be a museum to be governed by a foundation.
The house was built by Paulina’s father, Marcellus Bisdom van Vliet, who was Mayor of Haastrecht for over fifty years and who could just see the completion of the house in 1877 just before he died. Paulina and her husband Johan Jacob le Fèvre de Montigny were the first and last to live in the house.
The house stands on the location of an old house which was built by the same family in the 17th century and from which the red beech in the garden (1692) is the only reminder.
At the entrance of the museum you get a short introduction and a printed guide but then you are left to yourself to wonder through the various rooms. The printed guide is available in English, French, Italian, German and Dutch. The guides of the museum speak good English and will from time to time catch up with you to demonstrate some beautiful old music boxes and music clocks, all in mint condition.
When you go from room to room you will see there were only candles to light the rooms. Madam was against all those “modern” inventions such as electricity.
Most of the property inside the house is from the second half of the 19th century and displays the wealth of the owners. It is a pleasure to wonder around and see all the interesting details of a time long gone.
Opposite the house is a large park which was part of the estate when it was built but which is now cut-off by the busy main road (Provincial Road 228). In the park is a cenotaph where the last owners lay buried. Opposite this monument is the burial place of Paulina’s dog Nora.

The city hall of Gouda was completed in 1450 and is the oldest gothic city hall in the Netherlands.
The city hall is in the heart of Goudas market area. When we first arrived it was surrounded by the Wednesday markets. But by 6 o'clock they had packed up and we were able to see the whole building. It's nice to walk all around the building.
