We visited Shelby Park to see the classic and historic carousel. Since we were from out of town, Tommy let us in to see the carousel before the official opening time. What a treat!! The carousel was beautiful, excellently restored and maintained. Tommy, himself a carousel buff, told us the history of the carousel. He was very cordial and we appreciated his friendliness. A real highlight of our trip to North Carolina. We had a picnic in the perk.

This was a nice three hour visit. I visited the Visitor Center, watched the movie, had a picnic lunch and then walked the 1.5 mile Battlefield Trail. I would recommend proceeding counter-clockwise from the Visitor Center--maybe a little less steep in that direction. There are plenty of nice benches along the way to rest and contemplate; I especially enjoyed the audio option, so take your cellphone to enjoy the narration along the way. And, as an added treat, at the tall white monument there were thousands of swarming lady bugs--a first for everything.

This is a lovely park with oodles of parking. The mountains have several trials that range from easy to...Elizabeth I'm coming to join ya (In my Feed Sanford voice). We took the Pinnacle trail. It took us about 2 hours...it is one of the strenuous trails...so if you're not about that life...don't take that one lol. Lots of opportunities for photography if you're into nature photography. Also has camp grounds if you wish to rough it over night. I think there is a cost...just check the website.

Rivers have always been of critical importance to man but today, we tend to take them for granted. They provide us our water. They are a habitat for wildlife. They are a recreational outlet. Yet, we take from them and seldom give back. The Broad River flows from the Blue Ridge Mountains and empties into the Atlantic tidewaters. For Native Americans, it was a pathway from the foothills to the sea. Its meandering course and mild currents made travel along it relatively easy. Today, the river's importance to natural ecosystems and to our needs is understood more fully. Its scenic and recreational importance is also understood, Parts of the river in South Carolina have been designated a "state scenic river". In 1994, citizens of Cleveland County galvanized into action to preserve part of the Broad River near Boiling Springs, NC. In a unique public/private partnership, a 448-acre tract of land along the both sides of a stretch of 1.5 miles of river was purchased and deeded to Cleveland County and the Town of Boiling Springs. A governing volunteer body, the Broad River Council, was formed to manage it. Since that time, the council has guided the development of what is called the Broad River Greenway, following a twenty-year master plan. Shelters, picnic areas, handicapped accessible trails and additional property acquisition have been the initial priorities.

The Broad River Greenway has 13 miles of natural surface trails weaving through this 1500 acre park. I usually bring my dog, she prefers a natural surface to a concrete sidewalk. We have a 9-mile loop following the perimeter of the park that offers a challenging terrain with several creek crossings.

almost too quiet here, after visiting the federal park next door...this was a let down. not much to see. farm and trails, ponds =ok. I did like the waterfall. Kind of run down place. maybe campers like it...

This is a small outlet but a good place to stop on I-85 and stretch your legs. There are many name stores and a small clean food court to with an on duty hostess to give local information. We saw 70s/80s country music/broadway star Gary Morris at this renovated movie theater. It was a great venue for a man, his guitars and his amazing vocal range. There are no bad seats in the house and those seats are comfortable. There is a bar, although no food and drink in the actual theater.

Owner has small children working at the trail without supervision. We saw one little kid (maybe 6 or 7 yrs old) lock a customer inside a port-a-potty. Poorly managed.
