This is the most interesting place that I have been since I was in Bengkulu!
The fort is really amazing and near to the beach.
It would have been more interesting if the local government provided some tour guides to tell the history.
Nevertheless, its a must visit place!

Enggano Island

Reviewed By parklife8 - Jakarta, Indonesia

My husband and I went to Enggano last week (3rd week of August). We flew from Jakarta to Bengkulu (55 mins) on Sunday and continue the flight using Susi Air from Bengkulu to Enggano the day after (Susi Air Bengkulu-Enggano-Bengkulu only departs on Mondays and Fridays).
We circumnavigated the island using a small wooden fisherman boat, which was pre-arranged by our guide, Zulvan (being the best and the only guide in the island). We went to "sebalik" or the back (western) side of the island, which still has no/rare inhabitants.
The trip was awesome: every now and then, we stopped at the beach (oh yeah, with white sands) to wait for the tide be high enough for the boat to pass, hung our hammock and just chill. At night, we docked the boat at the nearest beach and set up our tent, or just stayed overnight in fishermen's hut that we found. On the first night, we went fishing during the low tide, by using spear as our only tool. Our guide and boat "captain" (as he was the person in charge to operate that bad boy) then cooked us the best grilled fish I ever tasted. Plus some other catch of the day, including giant fresh oyster!
Took us 3 days to circumnavigate the Enggano island and visited Pulau Merbau and Pulau Dua. The sea was rough, and we were told that best season to visit is actually around January-May. The guide also showed us some good spots for Surfing and snorkeling.
We then spent the next day exploring the village of Ka'ana, and met some of the friendliest people, who won't hesitate sharing anything with you.
======
Tips:
1. Accommodation is very minimum (read: none), bring your own tent
2. You may need to consider buying travel insurance. The Susi Air flight is occasionally cancelled (ours was cancelled due to mechanical issue). Ferry is always a good option (12 hours). Economy class ticket is IDR 56K, you can upgrade to Business/VIP for additional IDR 50K. The ferry leaves Enggano every Wednesday and Saturday.
3. Dynamics of the villagers in preparing their crops (bananas, cocoa, coconuts and "jengkol" - some type of peas) to be loaded onto the ferry are worth to observe and experience. You should try mingling and do some helping out
4. Important contact: Zulvan Zaviery (our guide in Enggano) and Pakjo (our car rental contact in Bengkulu). Their services have exceeded our expectations!
