Rock Cut State Park

Scenic park of 3,092 acres that offers many recreational options such as camping, hiking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing.

Reviewed By megturley - Machesney Park, Illinois

This park is fun for paddling, hiking and camping. Paddleboards, kayaks, canoes and paddleboats can all be rented. In the winter you can rent skis and snow shoes. They have a beach that is closed right now but hopefully will reopen next season. The beach is super cheap and a nice shallow place to bring kids to swim and have some fun in the sand. There is a place that sells food and ice cream near the main lake. The park can get crowded on warm days.

We went here as a couple but it is a great place for the family too. There are a lot of different things to do. I like the lazy river the best. I also like the wave pool. They have lockers that you can rent to keep items in. The gift shop has a lot of cool things for sale in it.

Edwards Apple Orchard

Reviewed By julieM3474MT - Chicago, Illinois

We went this past Saturday and the experience was so nice. The people that run it are all so pleasant! They have made it beautiful and welcoming with the flowers and well-kept grounds. Everyone goes for the apple cider donuts which are very good. I had the apple pie too which was delicious. The shop upstairs had nice food and decor items for sale. I purchased quite a bit! Including a bag of apples (we didn't go on the wagon out to the orchard, unfortunately) and a 1/2 dozen donuts. People were buying 6 - 10 dozen at a time! It was amazing to watch! I have never had an apple cider donut before so nothing to compare it to - but from everyone's reaction/conversation about them, I probably had the best first! They also have a petting zoo, a maze (made of fencing - not corn fields) that had a bit of a challenge, a barn with an order and sit with trays restaurant (hot dogs, bbq sandwiches type stuff) filled with antique farm equipment which was interesting. They have live music too which was very good and fit the experience! I will definitely go back - and probably this season.

Summerfield Farm and Zoo

Reviewed By saleinsycamore - Sycamore, Illinois

I wonder how the non-domesticated animals (hyena, wolves, alligator) were obtained. If they were rescued from a person who had exotic pets, then fine. But, if they were taken them from the wild, then obtained by the zoo, I feel really sad for the animals (especially the hyena and alligator, since they are alone). But, the most critical issue, in my opinion, is that except for their small dog houses, the grey wolves have no shade to escape the direct summer sun. This is torture for a member of the dog family since the inside of such a small dog house gets roasting hot on summer days. Both pairs of wolves need a larger amount of shade, e.g., from a tree, or from some sturdy man-made object. The pen of the pair of arctic wolves does have a cover over it, but a large shade tree or man-made object would be better. To see the wolves pacing back and forth in their tiny pens in the hot summer sun broke my heart.

PROS: interesting antique gas station and garage by the parking area; free parking ; interesting airman statue by the front of the museum

CONS: unstable hours; we went on a day they were supposed to be open and was met with a sign by the door that simply said” Sorry , we are closed today.” No warning on their website about possible closures.

Boone County Historical Museum

Reviewed By alfie2u - Rockford

I was here in December 2015 and I had a good time. This place features items that were used in Boone County in the 1800's. It gives people an idea of what life was like back then through to today. An item that can be found there are several different washing machines. How the washer has progressed over the decades is good to see. In the museum they have a replica of a one room school house. Complete with books, desks, and hooks for coats.
In Boone County we have the Chrysler plant and in the museum they have the very first car that came off the assembly line on display. This place is well worth the trip.
I would say the best time to go is when Belvidere does the Christmas Tree lighting. Last year they had the museum open and they gave out hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies to the visitors and many of us were able to see the museum.

Do you like fresh rhubarb? How about asparagus? How about apple doghnuts, apple cider or pies? Valley Orchard is the senior citizen of orchards in the area as far as longevity goes. Offering seasonal produce and fall fruits all year 'round, the orchard is just across from the Cherry Valley municipal building. The folks there have been planting apple trees for years and know which favorites are requested. In the fall children climb on hay pyramids for fun, while the adults peruse pies and fruits. It's close to Rockford and small enough to be personal.

Rockford Riverhawks Baseball

Great ballpark with excellent food, drink and atmosphere. The Rockford Riverhawks are part of the Frontier League. I took my children there and they loved it! They have a steam train just outside the park offering rides for the children. Lots of games and entertainment inbetween innings. Parking is only $2 and the cheapest seat in the house is $5 and you are still close to the action. Great family fun.

Reviewed By Dave A - Illinois

I hate to say it, but they have really missed the mark on this one. They should not be pricing this just for corporate activities. It should be priced $7 for adults and $5 for kids or lower with no restriction on where you sat. First come first served. Who wants to go to a game with just a few other small groups of people all scattered around the place. They should price it for a sell out. Make people have to get tickets early. You'll make more money on concessions with more people. The seats cost you nothing. When you have a full stadium, it creates excitement. An empty stadium looks like no one else wants to be there either. The crowd looked bored.
