Top 10 Things to do in Ballard, Washington (WA)

June 1, 2021 Marianna Hollaway

In Seattle you simply can’t skip the Central Public Library – a modern architectural marvel of glass grids, unusual shapes, and a “book spiral” that climbs four stories. Stroll over to Pike Place Market to visit the original Starbucks and play catch with a fishmonger. In the heart of the city lies Chihuly Garden and Glass, which will dazzle you with its colorful and delicate works. Glide to the top of the Space Needle for panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and Puget Sound.

This is an about page for a Brewery and for a Beer, or whatever. We guess that it speaks to the idea of whatever people want to think we are or aren’t or should or shouldn’t be, but, after all, it’s just about trying to sift through the incessant nonsensical mumble of it all.

Stoup Brewing

Stoup Brewing is a long held dream of Brad Benson and Lara Zahaba – two hopeless drink and chow hounds. That the two found each other twenty years ago seems fated – Brad, a scientist to the very last DNA strand, would proffer a hypothesis based on proximity and human nature, we’re sure (ahem). Whatever your take, the takeaway is this: Brad loves beer and has been a loyal student, courter, and cra

Golden Gardens Park

You won't find gold here, nor gardens, but with all the sand, sun and surf on this lovely beach, you won't even notice.

Golden Gardens remains one of the best spots in Seattle. There are playgrounds, volleyball nets, walking paths, sand, views and FREE parking. Even on a gray day, the views of Puget Sound are gorgeous, and the people watching is unparalleled.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this museum after it was closed for so long. We had to order our timed tickets, and that was no problem. We revisited some of the exhibits we had seen before, and also the new exhibit about Gudrun Sjoden and her creations. Also enjoyed the photos about Dads and their kids. They are very careful to remind us to use hand sanitizer often, which we appreciate. Parking was no problem. We also enjoyed visiting the museum shop.

Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (locally known as the Ballard Locks) is a waterway system that connects the saltwater of the Puget Sound to the fresh water of the Ship Canal, which sits about 20 feet above sea level. Boats enter the locks, the gates close and the water rises or falls to the level of the destination waterway. Watching boats pass through the locks, exploring the 7 acres of botanical gardens and looking for fish on the fish ladder is fun and free entertainment that draws locals and tourists alike.

Reviewed By kanemochi - Seattle, United States

Officially known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, the Ballard Locks is one of Seattle’s most popular tourist attractions, especially during the sunny months. The grounds also feature a fish ladder and the Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden — one of the most beautiful park settings in Seattle. Completed in 1917, the locks link the Puget Sound with Lake Union and Lake Washington. Once boats heading towards Puget Sound are in the locks, the water level drops as much as 26 feet to bring the boats even with Puget Sound. The fresh water is exchanged with salt water. The locks are also a critical link for salmon and steelhead heading upstream to spawn. A fish ladder with 21 steps or “weirs” allows spawning fish to climb to the freshwater side. Young fish, or “smolts” then return down through the locks out to Puget Sound.

Ballard Farmer's Market

Reviewed By ReaderPat - Sioux Falls, United States

The Ballard Sunday Farmer’s Market is huge! It has three entrances and takes up part of two streets south of Market Street. There must be about 8 blocks total, with stalls back-to-back in the street. I was not hungry, but I bought two delicious cookies to enjoy later. Only in a NW farmer’s market would you see such unique stands: organic raw sheep’s or goat’s milk, a stand that sells flavored kale chips, organic eggs from every kind of fowl imaginable, organic and gluten-free pet food and treats made from vegetables, every kind of organic vegetable or fruit or meat, stands that specialize in wild mushrooms or clams, organic honeys and jams, an entire stand that sells organic flavored sauerkraut, etc. I spent a very enjoyable couple of hours enjoying this market. If I lived in the area, I would definitely shop at the market.
