Italy is known mostly because of the wines produced in the Northern parts of the country: Langhe, Veneto, Tuscany. However, the South also produces excellent and underrated wines, from autochtonous grapes, largely unknown outside of Italy. Aglianico is one such grape and produces full-bodied, well-balanced and delightful wines, that are keepers and still quite enjoyable decades later. Mastroberardino was the winery that started the effort to place Aglianico-based wines (as well as a number of delicious white wines) on the map and has been enormously successful. Along with Feudi di San Gregorio, they are the two largest wineries in Campania, and are truly professional organizations. The wine tours in both are memorable, the tastings, outstanding. Visitors are more likely to find wines from Mastroberardino back at home than almost any other brand.
