Parque Natural Sierra de Andujar

Reviewed By KSAfricaHack - Harrow, United Kingdom

Great birdlife - eagles of many species, griffon and black vultures, flycatchers, bee-eaters etc. saw hundreds of red and many fallow deer, a few wild boar but no lynx. The area is scenic but access is limited and you have to stick to roads and one or two tracks by dams. Most of the area owned by hunting estates or farms raising fighting bulls, so you cannot walk in the countryside, only view from the roadside. Contrary to some nature guides on the internet, there seem to be no wolves left in the region, according to local experts.

Santuario de Nuestra Senora Virgen de la Cabeza

Reviewed By AggiePirate - Martos, Spain

The Virgin de la Cabeza is extremely important in this part of Spain and this is her sanctuary, a place visited by many pilgrims. You approach through the natural park of Andujar, a winding road through stunning scenery, where lynx can be found if you are lucky!
The sanctuary itself is situated at the top of a hill, and features a church, with the actual chapel housing the Virgin behind. There is a stone causeway leading from the village, up the hill to the sanctuary, with a huge art deco statue on the side of the hill.
The village itself comprises a few bars and restaurants, but mostly features accommodation for the various religious brotherhood who come here for a few days in April each year when the Virgin is brought from the sanctuary and carried through the village. This is truly an amazing sight but not for the faint-hearted! Thankfully the sanctuary is calm for the remaining 51 weeks of the year and is a very special place to visit even if you are not particularly religious. Highly recommended.

We stayed in La Caracola, in the heart of the Andújar natural park - and went out for the day with José Luis Sanchez. José is very calm, quiet and expert at spotting the birds and animals in this wonderful part of Spain. The highlight was watching a male Iberian lynx for an hour - as he watched our spaniel - would she make a good dinner? But as well we saw eagles, bats, deer, a wide range of birds - and the most beautiful fighting bulls in their prime, saved from the bullring. José Luis is so knowledgeable - we would not have seen a tenth of what he pointed out to us - and would definitely have missed the lynx - so well camouflaged...... One of our best days ever....

Someone has managed to squeeze in lots of information in a small space without making it feel cramped. Tons of resources at hand and a very helpful and friendly staff.
During a first visit, the place was overtaken by a school group and actually closed to the public. That didn't stop the staff from letting us have a sneak peek and gracefully answering many questions. Muchas Gracias, Lola!

Reviewed By Teo M - Benalmadena
