We are two old geezers who had never been fly fishing. Our guides, Jake and then Grayson, were very helpful in getting us outfitted and then out to the local streams. We fished some from banks and some in the streams with waders. I caught a 6 incher and a 15 incher, my wife "almost" caught one. Good experience due to the guides.

Gunnison National Forest

National preserve that encompasses part of Colorado's central mountains, around the towns of Gunnison and Crested Butte.

Reviewed By Fisher327 - Buffalo, Wyoming

We were in a Jeep so were not intimidated by some of the rougher roads. We saw pickups, Subaru's, and even one VW Bug on our trip.

This is a must see for anyone who loves the outdoors. Most of the roads are very passable. If you have time (and a map) do try to make it to Paradise Divide (over 11,000 ft). There is a pond there, at the top of the world and when the wind is calm the sky, clouds, trees and surrounding mountains are beautifully reflected in the water.

We were watchful for wildlife and saw mule deer and a couple of cow elk.

We had our dogs with us and let them run a bit in the Paradise Valley (our name for it) and PLAY IN THE SNOW IN AUGUST.

We had a wonderful time and plan a return trip to send several days exploring and discovering if all of the fishy looking creeks have fish in them!!

Over the past 40 years I have gone on float trips with any number of fresh and saltwater guides and Joel with GRG is right at the top. He was a great coach, knew how to fish the Gunnison River and was a really good guy. I highly recommend Gunnison River Guides if you are in the Montrose or Gunnison CO area.

Gunnison Pioneer Museum

Reviewed By NC1hiker - Redding, California

We recently visited the Gunnison Pioneer Museum. Our 9 year old son really enjoyed the variety of the exhibits. Plan on at least 2-3 hours or more. The admission fee for adults is $10, children 6-12 are $3. They take cash but cannot process credit cards.

They do have an amazing array of exhibits from a Denver and Rio Grande steam train with cars and caboose, to a twenty + collection of historic automobiles from 1908 through the 1970's. They have two historic schools, tractors, a house, the log cabin that housed the first post office. They have relics from the 1874 Alferd Packer incident at Lake City, Colorado. The have a nice military collection of items. Garments from the last 150 years. There is too much to list.

I would recommend this museum for anyone interested in history especially Gunnison County.

A rough drive over a rocky road (not gravel) had the driver frazzled, but after getting there it was glorious. A perfect afternoon. We navigated through countless photographers all vying for the perfect angle -- but maybe they're all perfect! Four of us basked in it's faded beauty (the Japanese call this wabi-sabi) and thought up stories ... explored the creek (a few hazardous spots) and made sure we left before we'd be on that road in darkness.

Gunnison Valley Observatory

Reviewed By scottaNewJersey - New Jersey

We heard about this at the Gunnison Visitor Center and thought this would be a nice way to spend a pleasant cool summer evening during our stay in Gunnison. However it really was a highlight. While awaiting a lecture that evening from a professor at Western State our enthusiastic volunteers used large telescops to show us a number of things with high powered telescopes, such as Saturn's rings. After the lecture we went to large room upstairs to see things such a close up views of globular clusters and got to see a large telescope in action. Unfortunately our visited coincided with the Supermoon, so the sky was overwhelmed by the Moon's light. Do plan on spending around 1 to 1.5 hours there - there is a crowd a bit of a wait to get to the large telescope but it is well worth it.

Lucky Cat Dog Farm

At the Lucky Cat Dog Farm, it is our goal to create for you the authentic dog sledding experience. Our tours take you into the back country of beautiful Gunnison county. For approximately two hours, you are immersed in mountains, dogs, snow and solitude.

We read about Lucky Cat Dog Farm on the Crested Butte web site (ski.cb.com). We contacted Becky by email and telephone to set up the arrangements.

Accompanied by my wife and two daughters we met Becky at the pre-arranged meeting point, outside of Gunnison. The dogs were raring to go. Catherine and I in one sled and Vanessa and Sarah in another, off we set, with Becky driving the one team and Matt the other. A big plus was that Lily, puppy sled dog in training, rode inside the sled with Vanessa and Sarah.

The trail we took was beautiful and Becky and Matt very informative and willing to answer any questions. It soon became apparent that the dogs were well cared for and part of the family, which was good to see. Roughly two and a quarter hours later (although it seemed much sooner, as time passed so quickly) we were back at our starting point. It was a great experience and we would recommend it to anyone.

Becky & Matt we appreciate your hospitality and your care of the dogs and enjoyment of the wild.
