Von Stiehl Winery

Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery… founded in 1967! The Schmiling brothers that grew up in von Stiehl Winery now own and operate it. The older brother, Aric, utilizes the most modern equipment known to winemaking as he artfully crafts fine wines. The younger brother, Brad, likes romance and history and manages the business. The Civil War-era building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a tasting room, a 10,000 square foot production facility, three Civil war era underground limestone tunnels and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views. Von Stiehl’s 30+ grape and fruit wine recipes use top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries), as well as West Coast-grown grapes (Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon).

Bearcat's Fish House

We stopped by to check it out after a local suggested it as the best fish house on the peninsula. We were pleasantly surprised by the volume of options! Not cheap, but good fish isn't cheap. We were also very pleasantly surprised when we were offered a small bag of ice for FREE to be able to transport our fish home in the motorcycle without losing refrigeration. Very nice and they were obviously prepared to do that, a pile of small bags of ice in the freezer for free to grab on your way out the door.

Now to the fish, some of the best quality, not overly smoky smoked salmon I have ever had! $11.99 a lb and worth every cent! Fast and very friendly service too. We will be back!

We enjoyed a nice stop during our motorcycle ride at the Ahnapee Brewery. They didn't open until 12 pm so we killed some time to get there, enjoyed the little tavern across the channel from it until they opened. Nice choice of beer, the milk stout was delicious! Very reasonably priced for very good beer. Nice outside seating in front and out back along the hill above the channel, fun to watch the boats go by. We will stop here again next time through!

Trophy Ice Fishing

Reviewed By keddie43 - Illinois

Before this ice fishing adventure I didn't like fish, bait, sitting still, well, actually I didn't like anything to do with fishing.....BUT, wow, did this adventure change my mind. We had a wonderful time AND we pulled in several Whitefish. Lonney Goman and his crew made this fishing experience comfortable, easy and unforgettable. On a bright Sunday morn, with a real temp of 8 degrees (never did know what the wind chill was) Lonney drove us out a couple of miles (on the ice!!!!!) to our ice shack on Lake Michigan, yes the GREAT LAKE, and handed us over to our guide Jason. We were soooo pleasantly surprised to find that the ice shack was heated and we actually had to take off all of our cold weather gear, even gloves. Jason patiently taught us how to bait our hooks and drop the line 65 feet into our ice holes. I was with an old friend and my daughter, all three of us novices to the sport. He instructed us on the best way to hold the rod and jiggle the line to attract all those fish that we could detect with the "fish finder".....not very long into our experience we each pulled in a nice size Whitefish.....we could only stay a couple of hours because of an impending blizzard (and perhaps a treacherous ride back to Chicago) so when we needed to leave, Jason drove us back to the shop and proceeded to fillet and pack up our fish.....he is an artist with the fillet knife, I might add! There was not one single negative thing about this adventure....I loved it and I am proud to say that we were told that we were the first all female group to go out and do this. Woot for us and Double Woot for Lonney Goman, Jason George and our wonderful adventure! One more thing....they had a deep fryer out on the ice and they fried up some Whitefish and we got to eat it fresh out of the lake....I even likedthat!

Hakuna Matata Charters

Reviewed By Doncolo1 - Colorado Springs, Colorado

There was miscommunication about departure time (3:30am) so we left three hours late. Things were a bit frosty at first, but later the captain and first mate warmed up. The fish were not biting at that time of day, but we still took home two nice salmon (about 10 lbs of fillets), and had a couple of other fish on the line. They tried really hard to get us some fish, even extending the 5-hour trip a bit (which got us our second fish). Nice safe boat, and excellent guides.
