Musee des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle

Reviewed By Dave A - Chelmsford, United Kingdom

The Lace museum is interesting, mainly because of a good video (with English sub-titles) showing the historic art of lacemaking, demonstrating the 10 stages, lots of dedicated labour to produce a small item. The rest of the Lace museum includes many items made in the subject period. Don't expect to spend too much time here: probably 1.0 - 1.5 hours would be ample.

Worth a look around. Another great French building and lots of history. Worth going in and looking at the stained glass window. Also plenty of street cafes outside to sit and watch the world go by.

Office de Tourisme d'Alencon

Visitor centre

The Alençon tourism office is a very useful first step when arriving there. Located just off the square of the Cathedral, there is a lady working there who can direct and inform you in English. There are many interesting things to do in and around Alençon but unless you get the information from the tourism office, you might never realize they even exist. A good example is a small scavenger hunt organized by the office which sets you on a walk throughout the city, discovering various landmarks and monuments while being entertained with the thrill of the chase at the same time.
There is also a boutique shop in the tourism office that sells Normandy-related items such as mugs, t-shirts, flags, biscuit boxes, etc.
A must-stop before setting yourself on the path of discovering the Orne and Normandy regions.

Birthplace of St. Therese - Shrine of Alencon

Visit the Louis and Zelie Martin's home, the Saint Therese's birthplace. You can also come on pilgrimage in the basilica Our Lady, place where Saint Therese has been baptized, or discover all the city where lived all the family Martin.

Looking for something to do on a trip passing through on a Sunday afternoon! Practically nothing open in Alencon so with little choice we went to visit the birthplace of Sanit Therese. With low expectations and only a passing interest we were very pleasantly surprised. This is a very well presented museum with an excellent multi lingual film and an interesting and informative tour of the wonderfully presented 18th century home of Saint Therese of Liseuix and her family. THe house has many original displays and restored artefacts and the guide was knowledgeable and passionate about her subject. More prestigious locations could learn much from this shrine dediacted to the ""Little Flower"

Parc des Promenades

This is a beautiful park, laid out in French style, probably for walking up and down on a Sunday afternoon in one's finery. Now it is a pretty garden with a playground towards the back. There's also an area with small animals, a aviary, an English garden and a rose garden bursting with roses. Worth a visit

This house represents those of the XVth century which also sold wares in the street. The stall, made from a single slab of stone still remains like a window ledge. It also retains a beautiful curved slate facade.

Jolie architecture, monument très bien restauré. Belle verrière. Mérite un détour.
Un lieu sympa qui reçoit de temps à autres des expositions. Pourquoi ne pas faire un marché couvert toutes les semaine.....
