Fortaleza de Juromenha

The Fortress of Juromenha is of military architecture, of medieval root, of which still today it maintains a part of the wall of castelejo. Witness of wars and bonds and inclement weather, undoubtedly strategically well situated, was considered one of the keys of the Alentejo border. From 1640, in the context of maintaining Independence of Portugal before a possible invasion of Spain, it was necessary to structure all the border fortifications of Portugal. This being one of them, and through its precarious defense, going back to the Middle Ages, King D. John IV was presented with plans for modernization. Between 1646 and 1668, this fortress underwent its restructuring, undergoing an explosion in 1659 and consequent the partial destruction of its wall and some buildings already built, and the death of some men of the garrison. In 1662 it underwent an attack of the Spaniards, having captured this fortification, passing to the Portuguese Crown in 1668.

We had no idea what we would find when we up the steep entrance and through the archway. We were the only ones there and could explore to our hearts' content. It was as though the population had simply walked off and left the fortress to the elements. You could see so much of the structure and imagine it back in the day. The scene looking out from the walls was beautiful. There were steep areas and some areas were rocky but it seemed quite safe if one exercised reasonable care. There are many restored fortresses and castles. This was quite different and provided a very different experience. If you are nearby, don't miss it!
