Second year visiting and again I enjoyed excellent service. Extremely friendly and proficient staff and top notch equipment. For certified divers, aquatic life may be typical of the Mediterranean, but there are several dive sites that they are worth visiting for the underwater scenery, small caves and ancient artifacts. A couple of nice deep walls as well, and weather permitting a big wreck (that I still have to visit though, so no personal opinion yet). Importantly, all dives are carefully planned and fully guided, so if someone needs to prematurely end the dive, the others will still enjoy a full dive for the money without rush. Everything is relaxed, with plenty of time to ask questions, feel comfortable and socialize, but at the same time schedules are met. For those who want to learn or try diving, the Aegiali bay may be one of the best places in Greece and I have repeatedly witnessed happy scuba students exiting the water, during my visit. Unlike some other dive centers, and from what I observed after two consecutive years, the owner (Dimitris) always makes sure that high standards are kept year after year, even if instructors may need to change. Moreover, if you are not happy with something, all it takes is a word to Dimitris and it gets fixed! This is probably one of the things I like the most, because I know that I will enjoy diving there anytime. If you visit Amorgos, don't miss it, and this dive center could be a reason by itself to visit Amorgos after all.

Mikri Vlychada Beach

Reviewed By saronic - Zurich, Switzerland

At the northern end of the island of Amorgos can be found two beaches: Megali Vlychada and Mikri Vlychada further west. Both can only be approached by boat or on foot. The path to the bigger one (Megali) is not very clear and not really recommended.
The smaller one (Mikri) can be reached in 45 minutes from the church square of the beautiful village of Tholaria. It is a descent of about 200m on a partly quite stony path, so good footwear is advisable. And one has to keep in mind that after the swim a return hike has to be done on the same path. It is absolutely necessary to take along some water and maybe something to eat.
But for people, who love a secluded, quiet beach the walk is definitely worthwhile. Also the wild scenery around here is impressive. Although exposed to the prevailing northern winds, as the meltemi in summer, the beach is surprisingly clean. But a swim here is not recommended, when the northwinds are too strong.
The small beach has some sand, but mostly pebbles, also to go into the water. On top there is no shade. If one comes in May, when the water is still a bit fresh (around 19° C) there is a chance to collect rock samphire, which grows abundantly in the surrounding cliffs. I was there again with friends last September on a day with no wind and it was a great experience to swim out towards the entrance of the fjord-like bay.
And after the hike back up a good coffee awaited us in one of the traditional 'kafenia' of Tholaria village. We then continued from here on a panoramic path towards Aegiali for a further 45 minutes.

Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa (Grace of Panagia -Virgin Mary)

Reviewed By doctorbobster - Gainesville, Florida

Reminiscent of the Paro Taktsang/Birdsnest Monastery in Bhutan, Hozoviotissa is nearly as impressive and much easier to get to. Here is what you should know.
A locked gate restricts access to the walkway outside of 5p-7p. Arrive early as the small parking lot fills up and you will park progressively farther away. The walk on a rock solid staircase will be an effort for some and takes about 10 minutes. The monastery in confined inside, dark with impressive displays. PHOTOGRAPHY IS PROHIBITED AND ONE OF THE ATTENDANTS WILL MAKE YOU DELETE THE IMAGES ON YOUR MEMORY CARD IF HE CATCHES YOU.
The best exterior photos of the monastery are during the approach. If you can, get there before the sunsets behind the Mountains. Better still, go twice: when it's open and again at sunrise. I did.

Chora

Reviewed By doctorbobster - Gainesville, Florida

If you are traveling to the Hozoviotissa Monastery, you will likely pass through Chora each way; this is why you should stop on the way back.
Located near where the road summits and before it descends into the coastal approach to Hozoviotissa, Chora's visible architecture is, itself, evocative. We parked on the highway just before entering the town and walked. Nearing the town, entrances to walkways become visible; take one/it and it will meander through the town's alleyways, replete with shops and taverns. We (a group of 9) stopped at one tavern for drinks and snacks, enjoying the view of the city. Looking south, you will see as series of windmills along the ridge...walk back if you can before sunset and enjoy the view of the city as the sunsets far in to the west.
Chora is why you are traveling the Cyclades and stopped on Amorgos

Had an excellent massage and facial. You receive a nummy Greek yogurt parfait after your massage. You will be asked to wear a paper thong for your massage, not like in the US where you can keep your undergarment on. The hammam is also wonderful. Get the black olive soap and exfoliating mitt sold at the desk and sit in the hammam and you will think you are in a far away land. Oh wait, you are. LOL So wonderful. The staff is the best, so nice and accommodating. Loved every second I was here.

Embassa Bar Cafe

This place is located at the bottom of the steps which form the main strip of evening entertainment for the party animals on this island. I loved this place because it played a slightly more alternative style of music; also going back through the ages too! The music played here is a little less modern so I found it great for my taste!
The owner of this bar is awesome; he gets drunk with the customers and has just as much fun! Great place to go.

Agia Anna Beach

Reviewed By ElenaDrivala - Bristol, United Kingdom

Very small beach just under the monastery of Hozoviotissa. You can either enjoy lying on the sand or sit on a rock. If you are quite young you can also swim to the big rocks that are in the sea just next to the beach, climb and jump off them. I used to do that when I was younger, not anymore......The water is quite cold but after a while you get used to it. I definitely recommend a visit before you leave the island!
FYI: This is where the film "The Big Blue" was shot. Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can clearly be seen.
Tip: Better wear trainers to climb down. Quite rocky until you reach the beach.

A good beach to spend a day on. It can get a bit windy as it did today, so the waves can pick up a bit. Gently shelving though, with a rock or two to negotiate underfoot before reaching chest height and the best swimming areas. Lots of eateries the other side if the traffic - free Promenade, or a very short stroll to the main harbour area. Great for watching the sunset from!
