Top 10 Things to do Good for Couples in Yogyakarta, Java

November 10, 2021 Milan Banda

Yogyakarta boasts stunning architecture and a truly spiritual sensibility. The ancient Hindu temples of Prambanan look like hand-drizzled sand castles, while the Sultan's palace is reminiscent of a gilded music box filled with jewels. Known for its arts and handicrafts, Yogyakarta is a cultural hub, a nerve center for traditional and modern puppetry.

Merapi Volcano

Reviewed By pondheron - Mumbai, India

We took the 90 minute mini Jeep Tour to Merapi - a little apprehensive about the rainclouds that obscured the sky through most of the day. The brightly coloured old red Jeep with a young man at the wheel bumped across the route - which was mostly paved , slowed by oncoming truck traffic carrying volcanic ash away for construction. We stopped at a village which had been damaged by the lava in the 2010 eruption - preserved complete with skeletons of cattle, burnt motorcycles and home appliances, a volcanic rock that was shaped like a face and appropriately called The Alien, and finally at the last lookout point 4.5 kms from the imposing volcano. The rain clouds cleared after a drizzle and the volcano was clearly visible - smoking ominously. An eerie and imposing sight on a dull drizzly day. The route is dusty so make sure you use the dust cover or take care especially if you are asthmatic or allergic. A very enjoyable drive with a fascinating view. Well worth the price of ₹1750 (Rp 350000) for 2.

This museum located in Kaliurang and quite far from downtown Yogyakarta. However, it has exquisite exterior and interior building with natural design. It has lots of private collection from collectors that remark the Mataram and Ngayogyakarta Sultan. This museum is private owned, there for quite pricey for the entrance fees, but it's worth it. They also provide tour guide included with entrance fees.

Ijo Temple

Reviewed By camsean - Townsville, Australia

It is hard to believe it now, but just 15 years ago these temples were unrestored piles of collapsed stones which only archaeologists were interested in. With a number of temples now restored to something approaching their original beauty, Candi Ijo is now one of the most impressive Javanese temple sites and a must-see for tourists to Yogyakarta. That said, restorations are still ongoing here and the total of six restored temples may eventually be added to. The main temple, or candi induk, is a remarkable structure which features kudu heads, kala niches and a truly gargantuan yoni. Its three satellite temples are also in condition and one of them shelters one of the most perfect Nandi statues in all of Java. It is also worth mentioning that this temple has sweeping views of the Prambanan Plain being situated at a height of 420 metres above sea level. Entrance costs 10,000 rupiah for foreigners.

Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan

Reviewed By 581rianas

This dance performance is highly recommended to watch if you come to Yogyakarta. Just about half hour trip from Yogyakarta, you can visit Prambanan temple and the dance performance which located in the same area. The story is basically about true love based on Indian Ramayana. It involves lots of dancers with nice costume. You can read the story from the booklet or from the projector they showed during the show (it’s in English and Indonesia). We chose the VIP seat (cost around Aus$40) due to the seat as the non VIP seat will requires you to sit on the stone for around 2 hours. The temple in the background gives fantastic feeling as we enjoy this night performance. Please keep in mind that you only can get the outdoor performance during dry season, while for some other months the performance will be indoor during rain season (from November). Just browse this information and also to book ticket online by googling about Ramayana ballet prambanan. Personally I will recommend to watch this performance outdoor during full moon.

You can join local saturday mass here at 4 pm using Javanese language at the open church. Feel very peaceful even though I can't understand the language. There's a temple next to the church and inside there's Jesus Christ statue. You can pray here and take holy water from 9 tap water beside the temple (candi). Bath room available here. Visitors can take a bath without using soap, shampoo and no towel needed to dry your body. The water is easy to evaporate and your clothes will not get wet. it's magic and people believe if you take a bath here, it will release your pain and you will be healed (physically and mentally). I do believe that :)
