We visited Oregon's Willamette Valley to find small production pinot noir, this was a nice find in the town of Carlton. Tasting rooms are fun and eclectic in style, this downtown tasting room is warm, casual, yet also intriguing with its atmosphere. We got to speak to the owner who was very excited to share his wine vision with us. The wines are very good and at approachable prices. We were especially impressed with the Rhone varietals which gave us a break from pinot noir for several days. But the pinot noirs were excellent as well.

Chris James Cellars

Chris James Cellars is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery that produces unique and interesting wines in Carlton, Oregon. We produced our first wines in 2015 and have since grown to offer a wide selection of whites, reds and sparkling wines. Our approach to white wines is to emphasize and preserve the varietal aromatics, flavor and acidity. In red wines we seek to develop intense flavors through harvest decisions and winemaking techniques during fermentation and focus on mouthfeel and silky texture during maturation. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, 12pm-5pm (February through November) and by appointment. The tasting room is tended by the cellar staff who are responsible for making the wines and can offer personalized winery and vineyard tours tailored to your interests. The tasting room is available for private events.

We got to spend the night at Chris James Cellars (by reserving a spot through Hipcamp) and loved both the camping experience, and the wine tasting experience. We got to meet Bethany - one of the owners - and our hostess was Annabella. Both were AMAZING hosts, and had so much passion for their wine. They also taught us so much about the winemaking process, and about the history of their winery. Plus, the wine was excellent (especially the 2017 claret), and the view and atmosphere from their deck was outstanding. Definitely plan to visit Chris James Cellars!

We had to make an appointment because Yamhill County is only in Phase 2 of the pandemic reopening. We sat outside and were served by Eleanor who was extremely knowledgeable, full of stories, and patient with our nonstop interruptions. $14 for a flight of five - she gave us a couple additional tastes no charge - and then all tasting fees were waived when my friends joined their club. This place is unusual because it's a bottling collective so you can taste wines from multiple makers. It was a great experience!

We recently scheduled a "virtual wine tasting" with Ken Wright Cellars and it was an incredible experience! This was a special event for a birthday celebration and while we would have loved to go in person, J'Aime and the team at Ken Wright Cellars did an amazing job with the virtual event. From organizing shipments to our friends in over 8 different states to unique touches in our wine shipments (birthday hats, charades games, candy bars), they really went above and beyond. If you are looking to taste some amazing wines and gain some wine knowledge information, all from the safety and comfort of your own home, then definitely look into their virtual tasting experiences. The wines are also top-notch and our group ended up ordering a case and a half after the event. Kudos all around for the team and this experience! We look forward to visiting in person when we can!
