Maggie and Brian displayed a natural sense of hospitality and ensured that everything we had everything we needed during our stay. The whole experience ran smoothly and we were happy share it with them. They are very passionate and knowledgeable about horses. They displayed professionalism towards beginner and advanced riders and guided riders at their own pace. We absolutely loved the horse riding and the experience as a whole, and highly recommend this to anyone visiting Zomba or Luwawa. We stayed in a newly well built cottage in Luwawa, which is fully equipped and self catering. The views are jaw dropping and privacy is ensured. Make sure that you have all the food you need as there aren't any stores near by. It is 2 hours from Mzuzu and +- 4 hours from Lilongwe. This is a must in Malawi.

Shire Eco Safari Camp

This safari camp, located beside Liwonde National Park and the western bank of the Shire River, holds the distinction of being owned and operated by Malawians. Enjoy game drives, boat safaris, and viewing the night sky with a Dobsian telescope--the only one found in Malawi! Accommodations includes three meals, and either rustic reed ensuite chalets or camping with access to showers and toilets.

What a fantastic experience. My husband and I traveled to Malawi to visit Shire Eco Camp in December 2019. This place is amazing!! We stayed four beautiful days in a rustic style lodge. Our lodge was in the shape of a yurt that included a comfortable queen size bed, sink, shower, and toilet. The accommodations were charming. Now on to the meals. Rodrick, the chef, is incredibly talented and was very accommodating with all my dietary needs. I was a little concerned because I am a vegetarian, but Rodrick prevailed. During our stay, we went on a boat and safari tour and ended our evenings stargazing. McCloud, what will we do without you? McCloud was very attentive during our stay at the camp. He assisted with the boat tour, which was very relaxing. We saw elephants, hippopotamus, crocodiles and more. Billy Mphande, thank you, thank you for an amazing Safari tour. The most memorable moment was seeing the Sable Antelope, which is now my favorite animal. Thank you for a marvelous time at Eco Shire Camp.

Majete Wildlife Reserve

Reviewed By kayakcarol - Accord, United States

Majete is the premiere national park in Malawi thanks to an organization called African Parks that has been instrumental in introducing the Big Five since it took over management in 2003 after it had been decimated by poachers. Since then they have worked with the local villages and the entire reserve is now fenced with several scout camps situated around the perimeter to monitor for breaches around the borders. 18 giraffes were recently introduced and were well acclimated evidenced by several sightings along the Shire river. On one of our game drives we witnessed an impala staring into the bush barking an alarm call. A view through binoculars prompted by our guide revealed 2 leopards cruising the hood! My sister and I were volunteers for an Earthwatch project working with 3 researchers, setting up camera traps to assess animal populations and looking at elephant behavior with help of a newly acquired drone. Researchers work with park staff and local villagers to help keep a balanced ecology ( one ongoing project is constructing beehives as a deterrent to set up near the magnificent baobab trees which are being ravaged by the elephants)! We stayed in the campground but there is an overnight lodge near one of the several artificial solar powered waterholes. The park staff can arrange bird watching (eagles, vultures, bee eaters, storks, owls), night drives, a local village ( non touristy visit with food and mat making demo and traditional dancing which was amazing!) I have visited several countries in Africa and this trip was very rewarding and renewed my hope in the future of conservation by immersion in the local culture with dedicated well organized, focused efforts by African Parks and Earthwatch. I highly recommend visiting Majete. Lake Malawi is not far for an additional destination! Malawi is known as the warm heart of Africa due to the friendliness and engagement of the people.

The last half hour you have to use your hands often, but even for a not experienced hicker it is good possible to get to the top. Fro the top you have a STUNNING view!! With clear weather, early in the morning it is possible to see Lilongwe and even lake Malawi:)

Kuti Wildlife Reserve

Kuti Wildlife Reserve is located in central Malawi. This nation is known as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’, both for its stunning beauty and friendly people. Kuti is home to a variety of animals native to this area. Although no dangerous predators live here, there are plenty of animals such as zebra, eland, monkeys, giraffe and a great variation of birds. The absence of dangerous game makes the park accessible on foot or by bicycle, which gives you a unique and up-close experience with the bush. Besides sharing the beauty of nature, Kuti Wildlife Reserve is important for the local communities. We raise awareness about ecology and support community projects. By changing local perceptions of wildlife, we hope to preserve wildlife for future generations. Visit Kuti and experience the unique tranquillity of the African bush!

Visited with family in May and friends in June. We love the self catering cottages here. Would recommend Sable as a great spot for a relaxing escape with family and friends. Well equipped, cosy units with a great outside Braai area. Definitely recommend booking a Bush breakfast. We've had these at different locations and loved the option of a morning cycle to the venu. The sunset deck is a spectacular spot for sundowners. We will definitely be back soon!
