Cathedral of St. Martin's and St. Nicholas

Reviewed By paullegate - St Ives, United Kingdom

On the riverside of Brda River is St. Martin and St. Nicholas Cathedral. It is a Catholic church which was built in the 15th Century and has a Gothic style and serves as a parish church and cathedral of the Diocese of Bydgoszcz. It was given cathedral status by Pope John Paul II in March 2004. Inside the cathedral it is very ornate and quite captivating. The cathedral is incredibly charming and is worth seeking out whilst in Bydgoszcz.

Bydgoszcz Basilica

The Basilica is not very far from Bydgoszcz Bus Station. I had visited the Basilica once before in winter, and had not appreciated its merits, as then it was a grey day. When I visited the Basilica in May 2012, it was on a bright sunny day. The architecture is in the Classic style, and the building is large. I liked the way the colours of the walls stood out subtly under the bright sunlight. I was also struck by the memorial to the Smolensk air crash. The next time I stay in Bydgoszcz I will make a point of visting the Basilica again, because I have not been in many buildings similar to its vast, spacious interior and the Classical style of architecture suits my tastes..

Old Town

Reviewed By endrju_74 - Ipswich, United Kingdom

We never thought Bydgoszcz has such a nice old town, well, we never thought Bydgszcz has an old town at all, we rather associated this city with post-industrial landscape. It turns out the old town, called sometimes as location town, has a lot to offer, in terms of heritage buidings, museums, and great landscapes along the water system, which is build around Brda river. Obviously the market square, with huge Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom in Bydgoszcz (Pomnik Walki i Meczenstwa Ziemi Bydgoskiej) is the centre of it all, but I would strongly recommend a visit to Wyspa Młyńska (Mill's Island) in first place, as it seems to be the top spot, especially for live outdoor events. Many old building were refurbished recently, so it all lookes very nice indeed.

Tightrope Walker - sculpture

Reviewed By endrju_74 - Ipswich, United Kingdom

Quite amazing, how it balances just above the river for so many years. Unveiled on 1 may 2004, on the day Poland joined the EU - and this is to commmorate that fact, like Poles finally crossed the river, or least it seemed.... Best view from Jerzy Sulima-Kamiński bridge - that way you got all heritage buildings on Brda river embankment in the background. This sculpture is close associated with another sculpture in Bydgoszcz - Łuczniczka (te Archer woman) - both got same roman style shoes (Łuczniczka wears them, while Przechodzący got them on his shoulder), and the Walker carries an arrow, possibly released by Łuczniczka. The sculpture is right in the town centre - bridge opened for motorised trafic, so be careful. Car park just to the north of the bridge.
