Truffle Hunting in Tuscany

Would you like to try the experience of " digging " a truffle out of the soil for the first time under the guidance of an expert truffle hunter and his dogs ? Would you like to learn all the secrets of Tuscan truffles ? In a word would you like to enter the mysterious world of the truffle? Come on one of the truffle hunting excursions organized on our own land!

Reviewed By y2ky

Late May isn't usually truffle season but we emailed ahead and Heather - an ex-pat who has lived in Italy for decades and is a helpful, responsive, friendly ambassador for Le Pietre Vive and the Castello delle Quattro Torra where we stayed - let us know that the unusually cool and wetter weather meant truffles were a good chance. We were able to borrow gumboots (important with European mud!) and after meeting the truffle hunter and his adorable dogs, we were off into the forest. It was hugely entertaining when the dogs would sniff out truffles and the hunter (and me and my camera) had to hustle after them to stop them actually gobbling up the truffles. If you're not very sure footed, you can always just hang back, of course. Still, this is an activity for those happy to do a fair bit of walking in the forest and sometimes off the trails. It was great having Heather accompany us as an English speaking guide to give us some background and generally to tell us what was going on. We ended up with a pretty huge haul, which we were told was quite a find at this time of the year when normally the warmer weather signals the end of the season. We coupled this with the cooking class at Le Pietre Vive afterwards, which was a ton of fun too, where you can eat some of the truffles from earlier hunts (not the ones you've just picked, as they're covered with dirt!) It's not exactly a bargain basement activity, but as city slickers from Australia on honeymoon, we figured sometimes you just have to splurge a little. Great to support this old traditional practice too.
