Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Wheeling, West Virginia (WV)

July 7, 2021 Agatha Simes

Wheeling is a city in Ohio and Marshall counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia. Located almost entirely in Ohio County, of which it is the county seat, it lies along the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Wheeling was originally a settlement in the British colony of Virginia and later an important city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Wheeling was the first state capital of West Virginia. Due to its location along major transportation routes, including the Ohio River, National Road, and the B&O Railroad, Wheeling became a manufacturing center in the late nineteenth century. After experiencing the closing of factories and substantial population loss following World War II, Wheeling's major industries now include healthcare, education, law and legal services, entertainment and tourism, and energy.

Good Mansion Wines

It is hard with one review only to give enough credit for who run this place . Quality matters. If you are looking for quality, from the wine selection , to the cakes or a sandwiches ( made with fresh and esclusive ingredients not easy to find these days ) this is the place you want to go. Pizzetta on Friday and Saturday is excellent and it became a tradition for loyal customers. The cheese selection is impressive ( I personally believe most of the ‘’ bottega ‘’= little supermarket in Europe , it has not the selection Good Mansion Wine has) Last but not least: Kindness matters in this difficult period for human relationships: this place makes the clock go back when discussing over a glass of wine or a meal was normal. Highly recommend the wine taste.

Great history of Wheeling and the glass making industry. I had no idea that it was a popular place for glass factories. Great little museum that also explained how the colors are made for each piece. My favorite was watching a glassmaker make a Christmas ornament. The glass shop upstairs had some wonderful pieces for sale.

After lunch at the River City Ale Works we went upstairs to the Artisan Center. What a great place to get a sense of Wheeling History and if you are into books this is the place for it. Also the gift shop features WV made products. There are also great displays of goods made by Wheeling Industries over the years. Such a neat place. I want to go back and spend more time here!

West Virginia Independence Hall

We were visiting the area and were told to check this out. This is a really well restored piece of history. We learned a lot about the area. Being from Pittsburgh originally Wheeling was always just a pass through, but stopping here really did provide a lot of insight about the history of the Wheeling and how West Virginia was formed. This probably would not keep you kids engaged. Teenagers if interested in history would probably enjoy it. I would plan on 1 to 1.5 hours. The staff was excellent! Since this is their slow time we basically got over views from several of the staff members and they new the history well. They also said there are a ton of special events hosted by them and that the participate in.
