Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Swakopmund, Erongo Region

March 1, 2022 Malia Yoakum

Namibia's largest coastal town is a huge draw for merrymakers and vacationers from all over the globe. This seaside resort showcases its German origins in its European-style colonial architecture, creating a jarring juxtaposition against the landscape of the Namib desert. Sandboard or motorbike the dunes, dine and imbibe in a picturesque restaurant on the waterfront, or just marvel at the unusual birds and plants that populate the region.

EHRA - Elephant Human Relations Aid

Primarily, EHRA's wildlife volunteer program is structured in 2-week-long rotations throughout the year. Volunteers may join the team for a max of 12 weeks. Tours begin in Swakop but are spent in Damaraland. EHRA is an NPO which aims to reduce conflict between Namibian desert-adapted elephants and communities in the area. Our program offers on the ground, practical and realistic solutions to curbing the decline of elephant numbers and keeping the people safe. The award-winning volunteer projects offer a variety of trip options and enables anyone wanting to volunteer in Africa to contribute towards elephant conservation and really make a difference! Each fortnight is split into a dusty, sweaty and rewarding Build Week, followed by the thrill of very important Elephant Patrols. We also offer Family Volunteer, School and University trips, and the annual Fundraising Trek over the mighty Brandberg. Join us and enjoy the Namibian desert and campfire nights under the starry sky!

The gems and stones are awesome - what beautiful colours, it is quite mind-boggling of what is on display. Expensive, but if one can afford to buy, then why not!

Snake Park

Reviewed By Mot_Kiwi - Kenepuru Sound, New Zealand

Had a great time looking at the various snakes, lizards, tortoise, and terrapin. The owners were very friendly, knowledgeable and were more than happy to share such information. One of the pythons were shedding while we were there and with a little help, changed from a rather shabby, pre shed snake, to the most beautiful iridescent creature. Quite stunning. We were also shown how docile the black mamba really is as the owner picked up the snake and handled it in a very relaxed manner. There were newly hatched terrapins and chameleons hatching. All in all a great experience.
