Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago

November 12, 2021 Timmy Ribble

Former palaces and Arab mansions along the twisting streets of Stone Town hint at a grander age for this port city on the western coast of Zanzibar. The Old Fort, built in the 1700s to fend off the Portuguese, now hosts local performances, a café and an art gallery. Overstuffed bazaars lend an air of nonstop bustle. Mafia Island Marine Park sits just offshore, a haven for snorkeling the local reefs. Day tours visit working plantations where the island's legendary spices are grown.

This shop has more than souvenirs- they carry gifts that will become treasured keepsakes. I am so glad that I did some research before my trip and found this gem. I was able to bring some specific coins from home that have special significance to me. I bought two coins from the shop that were already made and then I left two coins for them to make with special inscriptions. They took my information and said they would be mailed out to me within a few days. Due to customs and such it took a few weeks to reach me at home but I was so very pleased with their work. One was sent off as a gift to a friend who truly loved it and the other was for me. I wear it all the time and it is a great reminder of my wonderful time in Africa. Asante Sana.

My daughter and I decided to visit Mrembo Spa today and it was marvelous. We booked the beauty experience which involved making a spice body scrub, preparing coconut for beauty products, a massage, full body scrub and then a henna design. We were there for almost 2.5hrs. The staff were wonderful, great English in the workshop, fab massages, freshly prepared scrub. Can't recommend it more highly. It should be on the main excursion list in all hotels as great value, great learning and a lot of relaxation

Old Slave Market/Anglican Cathedral

The Heritage Centre therefore among other things aims at promoting tolerance, reconciliation and an inclusive society, bridging social and ethnic divides by telling the story of this dark chapter in the region’s history in an open and factual way. The creation of the Heritage Centre, and making it accessible to school children, who are the country’s future leaders, is also aimed to promote interfaith and inter-communal dialogue and understanding. Furthermore The Site is an important tourist destination, and by improving visitors’ facilities at the site and making it more informative and stimulating, the tourism industry as a whole will benefit, creating jobs and wealth, and helping to reduce poverty. The Heritage Centre among other things is also benefiting many people as it is a great opportunity to promote interfaith relations in Zanzibar.
