Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Calistoga, California (CA)

July 20, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Here’s your day in Calistoga: Yoga. Massage. Spa lunch. Hike. Wine-tasting. Facial. Mud bath. Gourmet dinner (with more wine). Dip in a mineral pool. Does it get more relaxing than a spa town built around natural springs in the middle of wine country? We don't think so.

Vincent Arroyo Winery

This is our favorite winery of all time after going to so many different ones over the years. We normally went to a few each time we came to Sonoma/Napa area, but over the last three times, we just came straight to Vincent Arroyo and ONLY here. Other than the most obvious reason why we keep coming back (BEST petite sirah in the WORLD), this winery has the most happy, genuine, friendly, and generous staff. I think we were with Jeffrey twice and he was brilliant. This last time we were with David, and he was absolutely pure joy and amazing!! He was so generous with his time and explanation (and the generous pour!!). We had the most wonderful & pleasant conversation with him about wine and wine making for a very long time. We were very grateful for the time and knowledge (and fun stories) he shared. We highly recommend this place. Forget about all other ‘more famous’ wineries and just come straight here!! :-)

I’m a local and enjoy this wine more than any other in the Valley. The smell and taste are what personify Napa at it’s finest. You get it very easily from this wine. It’s not hard to coax from it. Some you air out or let mature. This one is right away no guessing. Every time. Every bottle. I find myself totally immersed ,with a little chocolate, in what is so fantastic about living in the Napa Valley.

We have always loved W. H. Smith wines! There's no leaving for us without purchasing a case! But one of the most amazing, informative, fun, and inspirational wine experiences we had was an afternoon with winemaker, T-Anne Butcher. The Wine Sensory Experience with just myself and my husband with T'Anne is one we have talked about for over a year now. There's no level of wine expert or non-expert that will not appreciate and learn from this experience. Highly recommended! And the wines are award winning, fabulous!

I found Joseph Cellars on TripAdvisor and wasn’t disappointed. We enjoyed a relaxed, educational, and delicious tasting with our hostess, Janelle. After trying several wines while enjoying the beautiful views, Janelle introduced us to the cave. What a treat! Highly recommend spending some time here.

Davis has become a regular winery of ours to visit when we are heading up to Napa for a day. The story of the winery and how it was created is amazing, the staff are incredible, and the wine and food pairings are even better. The location was hit hard as a result of the fires this year (2020), but the main building was thankfully unscathed and remains in tact. And even with COVID, the outdoor dining area allows you to enjoy a socially distances tasting while enjoying the beautiful views. With so many wineries to choose from in Northern California, it can be hard to tell which ones are worth spending your money on, well this is one of them. It is not one of those overly commercialized wineries with staunch and snooty people, these are very down to earth person people, with incredible wine. And if you can get a tasting with a tour, DO IT!

Stunning winery well known for excellent hospitality and wines. We were greeted warmly, and given a choice where to sit in their outdoor vineyard area . Diana, our wine host, was fun, excellent, knowledgeable and very personable. The weather was FANTASTIC: 70 degrees and sunny on Feb. 5!!! Jacob, the estate manager also came out and greeted us personally. They have a nice charcuterie plate available too. We will return again! In case you didn't know, the Calistoga "Winter in the Wineries" Passport program has been extended to April, due to the Gov's recent shut down, which is now lifted.
