Winter Lights are a wonderful experience this year! The Elizabethan Gardens have created a lovely, unique experience that follows guidelines for Covid Cautions. Reservations are made online and in advance this year, and there is spacing between groups as well as a mask requirement to walk through the Gardens for the Winter Lights. This actually makes for a more private experience than in earlier years. The music is lovely and playing throughout the Gardens, the lights are very magical and there are many lovely touches, including the theatrical Elizabethan figures staged as if a ball is in progress and (new this year) individual decorated trees in plastic wind protecting 'bubbles' staged at several points in the Gardens. The entire experience makes for a lovely evening, and you'll probably want to return before the season's over.

The Lost Colony

The Lost Colony is a cultural treasure and the best family entertainment on the Outer Banks! The 2020 season runs May 29 - August 21, Monday - Saturday at 7:45 PM in our Waterside Theatre on Roanoke Island. In 1587, 117 English men, women and children came ashore on Roanoke Island to establish a permanent English settlement in the New World. Just three years later in 1590, when English ships returned to bring supplies, they found the island deserted with no sign of the colonists. After nearly 450 years, the mystery of what happened to the colonists remains unsolved. The Lost Colony, is performed each summer on the same site where these actual events occurred. A company of over 100 actors, dancers, singers and technicians create a magical evening for your whole family. Become immersed in epic battles, haunting Native American dances, elegant costuming and beautiful music in this enormous outdoor stage production under the stars.

For a citizen of North Carolina The Lost Colony is a must see. For a history buff it is also a must see. For those that like a true mystery story and would like to venture a guess to what happened in this very location this too is a must see. Over the years this outdoor drama has evolved from the telling of a story of world exploration and colonization to the dramatization of assimilation and perseverance of the peoples from which many today descend, but maybe don't even know it! This year's production is finely crafted including song and dance as well as music that is fitting for the style originally created by playwright Paul Green---the "symphonic outdoor drama." The direction makes full use of the entire stage throughout. The stage fights and combat are superbly choreographed and executed. The costumes are all period appropriate and display great talent. All ages will enjoy the 2019 production. Lastly, the players all gave wonderful performances. We were present for the preview night (which was shortened by rain as others have noted), took note of the bad weather forecast for opening night (again shortened by rain) and were present for Saturday's first official full run of the show. It was worth the wait. Come early in the day and visit nearby Fort Raleigh or come back the next day to learn more about the first English settlement in the New World. Where do you think the people of The Lost Colony went?
